Convert a utility trailer to a covered trailer

Postby alloffroad » Tue Oct 15, 2019 11:47 am

I would like to convert my 5x10 utility trailer to a covered trailer. I am not real good with wood but i am handy with metal(welding). I realize steel is heavier than wood but if I use 1x1 angle I think I will be ok on weight. My question is will 1x1 angle be strong enough, after it is skinned, to hold op to 60-65 mph driving. Anyone with experiance using steel to frame. Thanks

To use a common saying, it depends.

Here's the frame of a Super Cub aircraft.

There are lots of these old birds that have been flying in bush environments for decades.

Granted they were built out of 4130 steel. But it's the design, not so much the material.

Just going to use mild steel. Thank you for the info.

Cost wise it may be cheaper to sell the flatbed and get a cargo. 80% of the work is already done.
Weight wise also.
My neighbor is thinking the same thing about his flatbed which is heavily abused.
