6 X 10 (V-nose) build

Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

Thanks.
So far everything works great on the trailer but the tow rig needs a V8.
Going down there we had a tail wind that helped but coming back headwind all the way. Plus the mountain passes made for a slow drive home.
I need a midsize truck with V8. For giggles I started looking at dodge Dakota/durango's
and old jeep Wagoneers/cherokees.

I may have to do for awhile and do some repairs to help power.

While looking at other rigs and various years. I saw a Wagoneer for sale in my area. I even had the green light to go get it.

Looking at specs. The Wagoneer was 180hp/240torque with a V8.

My jeep is 190hp/230torque inline six.

The 2 gen dodge Dakota/Durango is 220hp/300 ft lbs torque.
Just gotta avoid that year with the bad trans or find one with the elusive manual trans.
Just gotta sell the classic car.

Whoa, whoa, let's not do anything rash here now. What kind of classic are we talking? '57 Bel Air or '87 chevette? The gain between wagoneer and current rig is modest and the loss of mpg would be pretty big for a daily driver. But they are nice. And the Durango sounds almost too good to be true but 220/300 is a pretty good step up from the straight six. I dont think many of us can run much over 70 without horse whipping the tow vehicle anyway. Maybe the diesels. But is it worth giving up the hot rod?

PS I am always looking for more hot rods... just sayin'

Lol I can giggle McDave, I’ll run 85 down the highway loaded hp isn’t my issue
Some modes on A LBZ and she does just dandy with an additional 120 horses to whip

That jeep you have looks like larger tires?

That reduces your power curve from stock. Suggest trying a smaller tire first or possible regear on the axles to change torque

It's a 32 Pontiac Six. Probably not a good time to sell anyway. Just dont need 3 vehicles under my belt.

I have some repairs to do that should help.
Exhaust manifold crack got bigger/louder during the trip and a good tune up.

I was told 15 mins after we left, a big windstorm came through camp.
I probably should've stayed another night.

I was just thinking that you may be able to get some more performance from the jeep. As Bigdave said, the tires will cost some power. But maybe a header and some fuel mods could make some difference? Is it a fuel injected motor? Or even better, how about a LS swap? That seems to be the hot ticket these days. Or, just learn to live with it if the jeep handles all your other needs. As you said, probably not a good time to sell but may be a good time to buy. You may be able to work a deal to trade the jeep and some cash for a better tow vehicle, and hang on to the 32' till the time is right.

Just my thoughts...

I'll do some repairs and such here soon.
Gonna move the roof rack back another 6" and modify the windscreen on the front to help with areo

Betty the doomsday trailer got her first wash today and used the spare tire cover to keep the exposed tire covered while sitting.

Here's a Wagoneer that should pull your trailer nicely.

I could do burnouts too.

Sent my XJ in to for a new exhaust manifold.
Kinda loud right now.
I'll do a tune up this weekend when I get it back.

Usually I do my own wrenching but I have a full plate of other things to do, plus I can work/make money while it's being fixed.

Got the jeep back yesterday. It's like a brand new jeep, so quiet .

Moved the roof rack back 7.5" as far as I could. Made a new windscreen. Taking angle measurements from the windshield was 44° .
Old windscreen was at 53° .
Matched it up to the windshield angle and moved the light bar below that.
After a quick test drive. It's a big improvement . No whistling from the light bar.
It's even much quieter at 65mph. No noise, unlike before.

Grabbed some new plugs, wire's, cap & rotor along with a new coil. Haven't ever replaced the coil since I've owned it.
Should help.Image

Modstock, Howdy;

Where does it put the bug line on your CT? Once you eliminate the line on the CT
you'll notice a gain in fuel mileage.

Thanks, Thats a great tip.
Just finished the tune up. Runs much better.

I'll keep an eye on the bug line. Haven't put the windscreen on the rear of the roof rack yet. Hopefully it'll help kick some wind over the trailer.

I have been considering a wing for the van like we ran back in the 70's but haven't found one that looked like it would help and was reasonable. Probably have to fab one up. Thinking something like this. Only need to deflect the air about 2ft.

It might help a little, can't really hurt at this point. Plus they look cool... Don't laugh, I've had your mom in here!

McD, Howdy;

chuckle, "wangs" on vans ... good way to increase your gas usage.
Folks I know have a "wang" on their tow vehicle. They need to lower
it to a neutral position when they don't have the trailer hooked-up.
Can increase the drag envelope behind the TV a lot.

One Company I used to drive for had some flat-bed trailers with a 4"
extension added to the front wall. These were used o haul containers
and the office pukes thought the addition would help with fuel mileage.
Well, good in theory, not so good in practice. My average went from
about 6.5 or 7 mpg. to 4.5 or less. They cut the additions off 2 months later.

I was thinking of something a bit more subtle, although that van is awesome.
Gotta love those trucker wings.

Using my old "wind-deflector" I ziptied it to the rear of the roof rack (same angle).
((This is temporary)) .
It could evolve into something removable, all depending on the bug line.

So far, the front deflector is an improvement.
