explain my new solar charge controller ?

Postby jwhite » Fri Apr 24, 2020 9:24 am

I bought a suitcase solar panel a couple years ago and noticed the charge controller wasn't working so I ordered a new one and this one is not like the other and not sure if it's working or not what it reads is
charge current 00a battery voltage 6.5 charge current OFF 23.c

what does this mean I know what the battery voltage means but the rest I am not sure of this controller is not like the other one also the red button when I push it it does nothing even if I hold it down

is this thig working ?

Do you have the controller hooked up to the battery? Need to do that as a minimum to check operation since it needs to have a steady 12VDC to operate properly. If the battery is 6.5 volts... that one probably is shot... again... need a higher voltage to start operations. 23.C looks like a temperature in Celcius to me? Just guessing however. That is about 73F.... is that about what ambient temp you are in?

BTW.... always have the controller connected to a battery first and then hook up the solar panels. Controller can be in an unknown state if voltage is too low and will not regulate.

68 degrees now the battery I have it hooked up to is a golf cart battery and it was charged to flo before I hooked it up so I wondered if it was full it would show off ?
I don't know but this is not like the other controller I just clamped to the battery and the bars would show when full
I think original controller was a 15 amp and this is a 20am if that means anything ?

Just one Golf Car battery at 6V? Is this controller made for that? Typical controller needs 12VDC or higher configuration (if MPPT). What is the model and info on the controller?

ECO-WORTHY 20A Solar Charge Controller Auto 12V 24V LCD Intelligent Solar Panel Battery Regulator with Dual USB Port and Temperature Compensation
I bought if off amazon and I believe I bought the same that was sold with the suitcase solar panels
the reason I bought the suitcase was for it's simplicity it had the built in controller and all you do it clip it on the battery ?

ECO-WORTHY 20A Solar Charge Controller Auto 12V 24V LCD Intelligent ...... IS for a 12V or 24V system (auto sensing). Put two 6VDC Golf Car batteries in series and try it. Hook up batteries first and then connect the solar panel.

not sure what the OFF means but it does appear to be working ?

Good news. Off may mean it senses the battery is fully charged or, if your panels are not generating more voltage that the batteries themselves at present state, the PWM circuitry cannot generate a charge. PWM regulators are like that since they do not perform a DC to DC conversion like the MPPT controllers do.

It is probably doing what it is suppose to. Get the panels in full sun and put a load on the batteries and see what it does.

Thanks for your help it seams to be working now my other question if you don't mind I have 2 golf cart batteries and for some reason they got so hot that the screw post broke off and I replaced them on the golf cart but I have 2 that will still hold a charge I just have to clamp the ends on to where the screw post were ?
I was going to buy a jackery solar charger but they are 500.00 for the one I wanted I have a 1000 watt inverter would that work on one of these battery or regardless they would need to be hook together ?

If I understand your question correctly, you will need both Golf Car Batteries in series (12VDC) to work with the inverter. Most inverters have protection circuitry where they will shut off with less than 10.5 VDC at the inverter terminals. Like the solar charger, the inverter will not work on 6VDC.

Just so you know... your Golf Car does not work off 6V either. They are configuring the batteries for a higher voltage. Most likely 24VDC or higher depending on QTY of 6VDC cells/batteries required.
