Peep Hole in RV Door

Postby featherliteCT1 » Sat May 09, 2020 4:09 pm

I am thinking about installing a peep hole in the RV door of my trailer. The door is 1.5 inches thick.

I notice that peep holes come with varying view angle options, like 160, 200, and 220 degrees, and with or without an inside privacy cover that swings open and closed.

The ones so far I have seen show a shaft diameter of 1/2 inch and length of 1 3/8 inches to 2 1/6 inches. I am not sure if that means that I would have only 1/8 inch of useable thread left for installation, which could be problematic. I would hate to drill a 1/2 inch hole in the RV door and then not be able to use the peep hole.

The satin colored brass ones are relatively inexpensive, ranging from, say, $6 to $20.

I have no experience with peep holes. Does anybody have experience with a peep hole and, if so:

What angle view do you prefer and why?

Are the cheap ones junk?

Any issues with clarity and/or viewing distance issues?

Is the viewing cover a significant benefit (I would not want sunlight to shine into the trailer)?

Thanks for your help.

Most residential doors are 1-3/4” thick. The peep holes are like sex bolts (aka barrel bolts or Chicago bolts) in that larger outer diameter section has internal threads. The inner section has external male threads. You screw the two sections together until their outer flanges/heads cinch up against the exterior skins of the door.

Can’t say much about the quality except that the price difference is probably due to plastic or glass lenses.

Thanks Agie,

I misspoke in my original post. I was being sort of dyslexic and confused. Now I recognize that the peep hole I described will have no problem cinching down tight.

Thanks again!

I got peepholes. 4 to be exact. One in front wall, one in door and one in each side wall. No windows. Mine are 180 deg and no real need for privacy as they are about 7ft above ground or about 5'9" above the floor. Light will come shining in like a laser beam when the conditions are right. But that is usually only first thing in the morning when you are asleep, till it burns a hole thru your eyelids. After that no problems.

Peeping at what? What could be a knock-knock-knocking on your door?

If you are close enough to look thru the window without announcing your entry into my campsite, well.... it may not work out so well.

I put a large peep hole in my door!

I'm not keen on them. Super easy for someone to cover up and render useless to you. Finger, small piece of tape, quick shot of spray paint... At least with a large window it takes a bit more effort.

You may need a shim to install if you can't find one for the thickness of your door
