Fellow Veterans - Free access to Federal Lands

Postby flboy » Fri Dec 04, 2020 2:18 pm

Hi all... in case you were not aware of a recent change since October 28,2020 (thank you President Trump), please see the link below. I recently discovered this and had my State Drivers License updated with Veteran Status by simply providing my DD-214 (official copy) so DMV could make a copy. From what I understand, this is equivalent to having the Interagency Annual or Senior Pass (lifetime) by simply providing the Veteran ID at the gate. It is A nice benefit. I am sure I will be taking advantage of this soon.

Fellow Veterans, thank you for your Service!

flboy, Howdy;

yup no choice here in NM. Gov'nor double downed on us, State Parks are day use
only and to NM residents only again. Reason, testing Pos. went up 128% when testing
itself went up 300%. She's playing a numbers game on us. We know it yet nothing
we can do. There is no provision in the State Constitution for removal. It's all our
fault according to her.

Yup doin' just fine.

PS is Lexi finding her purpose yet?

Sorry to hear that Hank. Glad you are well in any case.

I guess you just can't fix stupid. It is like going into a restaurant and hostess saying, "you need to wear a mask to walk to the table." Then ask "is the table safe" and of course they say yes... then ask is that a ceiling fan circulating air overhead and is the AC on circulating air from tables over there.. Deer in headlights look! Or when the fast food worker passes out food from window on a tray. Ask why the tray.. Oh to prevent spread of Covid... Ask.. did you thouch the food and bag when you picked it to put on tray? Deer in headlights look.. I guess as long as everyone feels safe... that is the goal.... right??? Lol

If I understand the change correctly, this access privilege is for entry fees and day use fees in "standard amenity" picnic areas.
I do not think it will give you half price campground fees, like the Senior Pass/Golden Age Passport does. I have not contacted the USFS to see how this will be addressed at local boating sites etc., or areas where there is no entry station, and you leave your vehicle to enjoy the day use amenities (what to display at your parked car so as not to get a violation notice for failure to pay the fee).

Anyway, I think it is a great way to recognize military service.

It does not apply to "enhanced fees" which includes camping and tours for instance. It does get 50% off camping in most places not run by concessioneers. I think there is a place to write in Veteran on most self serve envelopes.

Much of this is covered on the website where I linked, but always a good idea to check in advance wherever you go so no surprises. In my case, I will just be showing up random places, so either I will get discount or not. Will assume discounts at Self Serve and write in Veteran on blank.

that is great, thanks for the clarification. Many of the local fee, day use areas do not have self service fee stations, fee permits are bought off site at local businesses or FS offices.
