Lewis & Clark Trail thru SD, ND & MT

Postby Kankujoe » Mon Jun 04, 2007 2:16 am

Nine days in my little camper... Week of July 4th & weekends before & after.

I'm planning a trip to follow the middle section of the Lewis & Clark Trail through Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota and Montana. I'd also like to swing down into Wyoming (Yellowstone NP) on the return leg. Right now plans are to stop at Lewis & Clark Interpretive Centers along the way and also finding a bicycle path/trail daily for a 1-2 hour ride. Would like to stay 1-2 nights in SD, ND, MT & WY before heading back to Missouri.

Anyone have any suggestions of what not to miss along the way? Been to the Bad Lands, Black Hills & Mt Rushmore already. Also been to western Montana. Mainly looking for things along the Missouri & Yellowstone rivers.

All suggestions welcome. Thanks.
Joe

Been there. It is awesome to see what they went thru so many years ago. We did the whole route, starting at the Pacific ocean an worked our way backwards. I worked on the IMAX film on Lewis and Clark. Two months on the rivers and hanging from ropes above them. It's amazing that they could make it thru what they did.

Have a great time!

Having growed up in Riverdale, ND...the Garrison Dam (the fifth largest earth filled dam in the world) on the Missouri River is really nice. It has several Corp of Engineer campgrounds that are inexpensive with showers, dump station etc right on the river, and you can tour the National fish hatchery, and the powerhouse on the dam for a real interesting day. Here's a link to the downstream campground. I haven't been there in awhile...but I think you would be pleased!!!
