Oklahoma, Natural Falls State Park

Postby Rickxr2 » Sun Jun 14, 2009 10:01 am

Last weekend we got away for a one night camping trip to Natural Falls State Park, in N. E. Oklahoma. Some really nice hiking trails with bluffs and scenery I didn't expect. Some of the filming of "Where the Red Fern Grows" was also done here. It's a small campground, no swimming or boating, but well maintained. There is a playground for the kids, and a fishing pond if you are up for a half mile hike.

Very! Very! cool photos felt like I was there walking with you on the trails. Looks like a place to put on our southern journeys list.

Looks great Rick ( & Linda) glad you had a good little getaway.

I had wondered about that park, saw it in my little travel guide. Was it crowded when you were there? what day did you go?

Hey Rick,
It looks like you and Linda had a great time there. I have passed that many times on my way to Siloam Springs Ark, but never stopped in. I will put that on my list of great places.

We really did like this park. It might be a good place for a future gathering. We got there Saturday evening and left Sunday evening, just guessing I'd say there were 15 empty rv sites. The attendant said they normally run close to capacity. The tent area was full with Boy Scouts. A couple miles west is Flint Creek, they have swimming there, and I think you can put in a kayak there.

WOW!! You ain't kiddin', man!! I've started many a canoe trip from near there. There was a campground at the confluence of the Flint Creek and the Illinois River where we started from and floated two days down to my realatives land.

Funny thing about this is that some of the movie, "Where the Red Fern Grows", was shot on my Aunt and Uncles land, also. None of the cast members had ever rode a horse or been in a wagon so in some of the scenes, my uncle was laying underneath the seat of the wagon (covered in canvas) with the reigns. He was actually guiding the horses and wagons. The actors had fake reigns going nowhere........

True story, it's shot near Tahlequah, OK.......... my birthplace. Anyway, I really enjoyed your pictures, Rick and Linda. Never knew that park was up there.............

Rick:
Many thanks to you for your post!!
Wife and I just returned form 3 days there - boy it ws hot but plenty of shade. The campground is VERY nice - wide camp sites - Very nice concrete pads & level pads - electricity (30amp) - water - restrooms/showers were well kept and clean!! Very nice facilities for a TD gathering, although we have yet to attend one this should be a nice place to do one. Cost for the site + water + electricity was $18 per nite + $5 reservation fee. Reservations are probably a good idea - campground was full Fri and Sat nites.
Cher and I will definately be returning to this park WHEN the temps become more moderate. The oak trees should be pretty in the fall.

John
