When I was stationed in Kodiak, Alaska in the Coast Guard, The bears were everywhere in the summer. We would string a hotwire around the campsite to keep the bears out. The food still went in a lockbox(1/4 inch steel plate) a safe distance from the tents.
Alaska has "open carry" so it's not unusual to see folks in town with a 44 mag on their hip. Old west style.

PG13 beyond this point:
I did hear a story about a guy wanting to go Kodiak grizzly bear hunting. He announced his desire to hunt in a bar and got some interesting advice. An old trapper told him to work with the bear's natural curiosity and just motion the bear over with your arm. Find an open area with hills all the way around you. When you see a bear just motion him over. When he gets within range, shoot him.

The man takes the trapper's advice and does this. He was in the cold tundra for 9 hours and was dowsing his fire when he finally saw a bear. Excited, the man starts motioning the bear over. The bear looks curiously at the hunter for a minute and procedes down the hill toward the him. When the bear gets within range the man grabs his gun and.........click....... He forgot to load the gun!

By this time, the bear charges the hunter and begins to mawl him! While all this is going on the hunter feels something hit his leg  and realizes what IT is he reaches down and grabs IT. The bear stops immidiatly. The hunter, thinking quickly begins to work IT. :baby: The bear relaxes and rolls on his back and closes his eyes. :pipe:

After a minute or two the man jumps up and runs for his life! Upon reaching the top of the hill, the hunter looks back to see if the bear is hot on his heals. Only to realize the bear is right where he left him, motioning for the hunter to return.

Remember, you don't have to run faster than the bear, you just have to run faster than the slowest person you are with !!
