Outer Banks NC Area Camping Info Needed

Postby WhitneyK » Sat Mar 16, 2013 8:49 pm

We are planning a trip to the Outer Banks, NC / Alligator River NWR / Pea Island NWR (and all points in between) at the end of May this year.
Anybody in that area have recommendations for where to camp? Looking for reasonable rates, if that's possible, and have the advantage of electric hook-ups this time.
Showers would be nice this trip too, :frightened: or at least access to some.

Also, any tips on the best places to see wildlife (animals & birds, not partiers  ) would be very welcome, my wife likes to chase down critters to take their pictures :snappy:

Any help / suggestions would be greatly appriciated.

We went down to the Outer Banks from Wisconsin with our teardrop in 2010. On the way down we stopped at Pilot Mountain in NC. We camped at Oregon Inlet on the outer banks. Here is my link to the pics on this forum:

We had a great time, Hope you do too.

The National Seashore campgrounds do not have electric. They only have cold showers as well. Have stayed at them a few times. The one at Cape Hatteras and the one in Ocracoke.

Thanks for the replies everyone

A couple of days ago we booked a campsite at Ocean Waves Campground: http://www.oceanwavescampground.com/
It's roughly located in the middle of the outer banks / island strip, privately owned, has electric, water, showerhouses, trees / shade (on the short concrete pad sites, which is what we are), on the ocean side / walk to the beach = $40 night. Didn't figure that was too bad since we don't spend much time at our campsite anyway and it's still just barely in the "off season". She's already found a place to stop on the way home about 2 hours away when we pull out of camp.

It's only about a 12 hour drive for us, so thought we would make a 2 day leasurely drive out of it :vroom: and camp somewhere around the Shanendoa Valley area on the way down and ??? on the way back.

Figures :x our zoom lens :snappy: is acting up on us and need to get it sent off asap so that we can get it back by vacation time :fb

Whitney -

Just curious how your OBX trip went (if you're back yet). The four of us are headed to Rodanthe (to the same 'Ocean Waves Campground') for the fourth of July week and I'm wondering how you found it? We've been to OBX 3 times before, but never camping.
