A friend suggested this route concerning a roadtrip from Utah to Monterey, CA. The section of mountains between Minden, NV and Jackson, CA is absolutely beautiful and worth getting off the interstate-plus you can bypass Reno, Sacramento, and outer limits of San Francisco. There is a lot of good camping and hiking trails through this stretch, and it is highly recommended if your travels allow it.
