Where's Juneaudave...On the final leg to LCG!

Marcia and I are off to LCG IX and an extended road trip!!! I was hoping to use this thread to let folks know where we are as we travel around....

Image

The first leg of our journey involved sailing from Juneau to Skagway on the Alaska Marine Highway. The inside passage was fogged for half the trip but as we sailed north it began to clear. By Skagway, the skies were clear with two large cruise ships in town.

Image

While we usually tow with Marcia's Honda Element, we took the truck to fit all our gear and dogs for the trip! The Ford loves the Canadian gas, but it wasn't too bad. Gas stations were plentiful all along the Alcan and we think we hit the fall colors at their peak. The Canadian Rockies were spectacular!

Image

On the Alcan we saw bears, caribou, grouse and wood buffalo near Liard Hot Springs Provincial Park. We found all of the Provincial Parks to be very nice and reasonable. Some even had showers! Liard Hot Springs in BC were just beautiful and a must stop.

Image

This was the view from our camp last night near Edmonton....like I said...I think we hit the fall colors just right. Tomorrow we will be starting a swing through Waterton and Glacier National Parks, When I get near a wifi again, I will post some more shots....Dave

We could probably figure a way to cook up that buffalo at the LCG. Just a thought.

Great pics, and have a safe trip. See you in LA.

Good grief. I just figured out where LCG is. That's a fer piece from Skagway. I suspect you feel like a goose heading for a warmer marsh to winter on.

Whoo Hooo! Having fun and topped 2000 miles!

Image

So we finished the Alcan in style with absolutely no problems. September was a great time to travel. In addition to the fall colors, most of the highway construction was done so we missed most of the loose gravel and oil. The fenders took a beating and will need some paint...but the varnish held up really well.

Image

We ended up spending a full day in Waterton National Park in Canada! I didn't know it but there is a 21 ft length restriction on Going to the Sun so we didn't spend as much time in Glacier except to camp at Apgar on the West side. Here is a pick of Marcia at Red Rock Canyon in Waterton.

Image

We spent Saturday in the Flathead and camped overnight near Big Fork. Then on Sunday, we traveled the Seely -Swan Highway along the Swan River and headed towards Helena.

Sunday evening on Canyon Ferry Dam near Helena.

Nixon is getting tired of driving, so we are going to spend the next week renewing friendships and visiting Montana family. If we can, we will spend some time in the Bitteroot, Anaconda, Dillon, and Bozeman before restarting our trip south....

The Bitterroot???? Going thru the Magruder or just the Selway area?

Poet Creek is a nice little place along the beaten path, just ask Tony Latham! :D

Wonderful pics. Thanks for sharing! Wet bird dog looks happy enough.

Not sure yet....we wanted to check some properties and old haunts in the Hamilton, Darby, Sula areas then cut over through Lost Trail Pass into the Big Hole National Battlefield. That's pretty high up....so we will see what the weather looks like!

If you haven't hit the Bighole yet and are wondering where to camp, there's some good boonie camping up Wise River (comes into the Bighole at the town of Wise River) or up Quartz Hill Road just upstream of Dewey. I've camped many a night right by the grave yard in the bottom. Hit Fefty's in Wisdom for a meal after the battlefield.

But if you head south from Wisdom through Jackson, think about camping at Bannack State Park. Great old ghost town.
