DO table

Right now I'm using the pan portion of a cheap disposable grill from wally world to hold the charcoal. I'm looking to get it all off the ground.

I like the sound of the ceramic tiles to use with on-site picnic tables, I'll probably go that route at least on a temp basis. I saw one regular table yesterday that weighed 27 pounds-maybe thats the way to go.

I guess I'll just have to go out and camp and cook to figure it out (darn)

That was my problem, I had my DO for 3 years just could not get myself to cook on the ground. I wanted it at table height, that was when I came across the Volcano. Yes go camping a few times then you can decide what is right for you.

I asked my wife I wanted one of them DO table (posted above) for xmas. :worship:

Be real careful cooking on tiles. I tried it sitting on a plywood box using cement board tile backer and almost charred a hole thru the plywood. Tile and metals are "burn proof" BUT they are not insulating materials and will transfer the heat to the surfaces under them. I now use the tile board sitting on 4 small bricks and I set the oven and coals in a metal pan. Burning tables in a campground ain't cool

Mmmmmm, good to know Gaston. I would have done the same thing-didn't know the temps would be that high.

I just had a thought. (did you smell something burning?)

Do you think an old satellite dish (the small type used by Dish Network) would work as a surface to make a small DO table?

There may be issues with the paint burning off at first. I'm not sure if they are steel or aluminum. I have an old one in the garage I might try. I'm not sure if the diameter is right to to set it on top of a (clean) metal garbage can. To use on a table, make some type of ring to set it on.
It's not fun and games until someone loses an eye.

I found a projection table tossed out in the trash worked great and light.
I don't know where the stainless steel pan came from but I held the coals well and acted as a wind break.

Your smokey joe Jr. grill make an excellent wind break for a 12" D.O. and helps to concentrate heat in cold weather.

I use a metal oil change pan as was suggested above, but I don't flip it. It acts as a windscreen too.

At home, I set the oil pan on a stove grate that has about 1-1/2" legs, and that sits on a slate table. Seems to work well. When camping, Ijust put the pan on the ground. Looks pretty much like this one, 'cause it is. I took this picture before Iactually used it.

We also use the metal oil pans and have for quite some time. They do work great, and we also use them right side up.

You mean one like this?

I'm not sure if an aluminum dish will stand up to the heat. I made that one because it looked like fun.

I like to make tables out of plow disks. They work really well. I make it so the windscreen will come off and the legs screw off. It packs down nice and small.

If the metal pan or plate is strong enough to support the Dutch Oven, short legs can be accomplished on those upright pans/plates by drilling four holes and using 2.5", 3", 4", or 5" bolts or whatever with two washers and two jam-nuts per bolt. The bolt-head will act as the bottom of the support. On the threaded-end, the arrangement would be jam-nut, washer, pan bottom, washer, jam-nut. This would elevate the pan off a table or the ground and offer screw-on, screw-off legs since finger tight is good enough.

Exactly what I was thinking Joanne. Except mine says "Hughes" instead of "Sony." And I just looked at it and it's an oval offset dish and not a perfect circle. It still might work.

Can you show how you attach the legs to your dish? Are they removable or fixed?

I use an oil pan which works well, but I have lots of access to old dishes

Hi John,

Take a look at this link. It has complete instructions on how I put it together.
