DO table

Not so much of a construction question as a what do I need-or is this a good idea question.

I purchased a rail that will allow me to attach/detach a table to the side of my tear. I plan on some kind of metal top (probably alum square tube) and I have very light weight small table I plan to rob a set of folding legs from-all in the pursuit of a DO cooking table.

Weight is a premium for me so I don't want to just buy a prebuilt table to haul around.

I don't have a lot of DO experience, so thought I would ask the experts, what are the major considerations here?

Thanks all

Its good to be around rational folks again-I've been off visiting football boards for awhile

I wouldn't use aluminum for your DO table surface because it has a low melting point. Steel, although heavier is a far better choice.

Also, you might consider using a free standing DO table because you can reposition it depending upon how the winds are blowing at the time. This has two advantages.

1. Wind is no friend to the DO chef. Wind blows the heat away from your pot and causes uneven cooking. You want to position your table so that the wind screen blocks the wind, or place the table behind something that will block the wind for you.

2. It's also nice to position the table the smoke is NOT blowing in your face. This happend to us at Cape Cod last year. We simply picked up the table and moved it 10 feet.

I have the Campchef DO table, I paid aroung $70 for it at Cabelas and it doesn't weigh that much.

Or you could use the 'Volcano'. Can use that on any surface and not burn it. Also use it as campfire pit or grill with it and the best of all use it for your D.O. . http://www.volcanocorp.net/

For an 8" or 10" DO you could probably use a cookie sheet and just lay it on the ground. If you mount a table to the side of the trailer, it will have to be sturdy to handle the weight.

I carry a 12" square ceramic tile (Home Depot: 99cents) to put pans and stoves on (I use single burner stoves). When it breaks, I'm out a whole buck.
Works on wood table.

Purchased a new cookie sheet for the house and use the old one under the dutch. works just fine especially when place on the firering grate.

or go fancy and get a plow disk and attach some removable legs so you dont have to bend over so far. (offical old fart tip)

You are welcome. I have used mine now for about 5 years, it has been great. One time I had chilli cooking and had it in the back of the truck going to a picnic. So I was making dinner while I was driving.  Now I am looking for bbq lid that will fit on top so I could smoke meat in it, then it be perfect.

We I was at the IRG the DO expert suggested using a metal oil changing pan (upside down). I found one at GI Joe's for less than $10. I've had a 12" DO on it and it worked great.

I use on of these for Dutch oven cooking:

<img src="http://www.campchef.com/includes/image.php?image=ct32lw.jpg&dir=/sites/campchef/images/products/&width=200&height=200">

The legs come off, which reduces the table height to about 10". The windscreen comes off, too. I pack the whole thing in the back of my car or inside the TD. Camp Chef - about $90.

We also have the table. Bought it this year and we love not bending over to the ground anymore. It can be located anywhere on your campsite, holds four DO's, (at least that is what we have put on it), and I like shopping at Cabela's. The other ideas suggested were great also. Cookie sheet......dang that's great.
