Am I a Cast Iron nerd now?

Am I a Cast Iron nerd now?

I just picked up a Griswold #8 DO on eBay to go with my Griswold #8 Skillet for the camping cookware.

I use Le Cruset CI cookware in my kitchen, which is coated and pretty.

But, for camping, I decided to go with the rugged look of plain cast iron.

I like the smoothness of vintage CI, which is why I prefer Griswold to Lodge and other new brands. Properly seasoned, the old smooth stuff is a tiny bit more non-stick, and I like the feel when I run a spatula across it.

I have been told that you can take a new Lodge and sand and polish the bottom down smoothe before you season it, but that seems like a lot of work.

So, with my two pieces of vintage CI, am I now a bona-fide cast-iron nerd?

Sort of reminds me of my ex-wife asking if the dress she was wearing made her look fat! After the stitches were removed and I recovered...I rethought my answer....I guess the correct one is..."do you want to be a cast iron Nerd?" :O :O :O Doug

Of course you know that you are a true addict when you iron weighs more than the rest of your camping equipment combined.

I like good cookware, because I like to cook. So it's not JUST cast iron. I guess that's one strike against me on the CI nerd chart.

I have mixed feelings about whether i WANT to be a CI nerd.

I can not see myself EVER spending 500 bucks for a three-tier waffle iron stand.

And, Paul, you may want to consider seeking professional help.

Thanks CD...I have :)
But not for an exceptional cast iron collection.
The photo of the beautiful collection I included in my post belongs to ma3tt.
If I only had the room....

Postby Eunice » Mon Aug 13, 2007 9:05 pm

I have never considered myself one but I have to admit I was curious so... I counted. I have THIRTEEN pieces of ci. and I am looking for a cast iron tea pot that doesnt weigh 20 lbs. oops make that fourteen, waffle iron is in the mail!
I am going to have to do as others and drag it all out and take a picture. I was amazed.
