What Can Break You From Using Cast Iron

Postby Off Grid Rving » Sat Jan 26, 2013 11:41 am

so I have been an avid cast iron user for 10 or so years now, last christmas I received one of those ceramic green pans.... oh great an as seen on tv gift. lol

AND they give it to the person who uses cast iron only. (I probably have over 10 cast iron pans in all) but i'll be darned, that green pan sure works nice for eggs.

How about carpel tunnel, or in my case arthritis caused by heavy lifting which caused carpel tunnel.

Your back from lugging it around! Oh. You mean break me from using cast iron? Hmmm.. I guess the answer is the weight of it will someday break me from using it.

I love my cast iron! I bake breads in a Dutch oven and cast iron pans. Right now I can't imagine not using it...

I think that the ONLY drawback to cast iron is the weight. It still wouldn't stop me from using it.

My grandmother wouldn't give up her cast iron even with carpal tunnel in both hands. She learned to drag it around the counter on a hot pad and trivet.

I love my cast iron too, one of my best pieces is a wagner waffle iron, was all rusted outside when I found it. its missing the ring though.... but i got it all cleaned up and re-seasoned and makes the best waffles. saddly I have not had a gas burner to use it on in a while. not quite the same with electric burner.

...how about... buying a house that has a kitchen equipped with a glass cooktop?

All the cast iron is packed away in the camper, just waiting for spring...

I have no problem using my cast iron frying pans on my glasstop stove. Used them for years on my old glasstop stove, and on my 4 year old glasstop stove. The new stove top still looks like brand new. I use the same frying pan for cooking over wood, coleman white gas stove, propane stoves in both campers and on the glasstop.

I guess I should have been more specific. Glasstop is too generic a term. Ours is a Bosch smooth top with a resin surface. The instructions specifically said not to use cast iron on it.

 Never heard of a resin surface. Mine is a Schott Ceran.
