All,

Does anyone know of there is a way to know if an old cast iron pan was ever used for recasting lead (ie for fishing weights).

Apparently this is one of America's favorite past times.

I want to use my old cast iron flea market finds but now I'm concerned.

All advice is appreciated.

I do some bullet casting in a regular lead pot, but it's not cast iron. I don't think a guy could clean up cast iron after melting lead in it to fool anyone, but lead poisoning isn't a joke.

You might try 3m's Lead Check system. It's made for paint. You might want to do a swab on known non-lead cast iron before you swab an unknown to make sure it doesn't give you a false positive on iron.

Id be very weary about using it for food if theres even a shadow of a doubt it's been used for smelting lead
As tony said lead poisonings no joke and it may hang up in the cast irons pores
