I have a few pieces of cast iron, and I wipe them clean with a paper towel and some olive oil while they're still hot. If there is food stuck on (like bacon grease), I toss in a little water and the steam produced seems to loosen the hard bits. Hit it with a plastic egg flipper or nylon dish brush while the water boils. Then I do the oil treatment, and I'm done. I never use soap or detergent, ever.

My ex-wife put all of my cast iron in the dishwasher once...

First off, Dutch oven liners are your friend when it comes to clean up. If I did not use one because I was browning meat or bacon in the DO I wipe all the grease out with a paper towel. Then onto the stove and add water and heat it up good. Not to a boil just nice and hot. wash the pot well with the hot water. Toss the water and wipe out with paper towels and put it back on the burner to get it good and dry. Cool and then wipe on a small amount of oil and I'm ready for the next time.

If I have cooked something that sticks, like cheese or pasta where it won't just wipe clean with the water I have a small plastic scraper that takes off those bits. Then clean like usual.
