Directions to Pamplingrove - nix Hwy 36?

Postby S. Heisley » Mon Jul 23, 2012 9:12 am

Computer directions repeatedly try to send people down Hwy 36, either from Anderson area; or, from Hayfork, via Hwy 3.

In the past, you have said not to take Hwy 36 to Pamplingrove and there are signs up, saying that it is unsafe for trailers.

However, is it safe for vehicles with trailers to take Highways 3/36 from the Hayfork 299 turnoff? (If so, it might shorten the drive time by about 45 minutes.)

Sharon,

Personally I would stick with 299 to 101. If you're not in a hurry you might try 3/36 but you won't make the time you will on 299.
Google maps shows 299/101 being 34 miles longer but 36 is very narrow and lots of twists and turns.

I've advised folks in the past not to take 36 West to get to Pamplin Grove, but...
Yes, it's more winding in places, but the drive is beautiful.
The only real bad area is just West of Dinsmore... It's basically a one lane road for a few miles, no dashed line in the middle of the road to separate the direction of travel.
If you choose to come this way, be on your toes in that area!!!
The payoff?... Mad River Burger Bar!!! :R  YUM!!!

Thanks Kevin and Dean.

Since I still consider myself inexperienced at towing, I'll take the "safer" 299 to 101 route. (If I wasn't towing, I would think nothing of Hwy 36 as I normally love mountain roads.)

Yes, Debbie. According to Mapquest, from Grant's shop in South Redding to 299 to 101 to GCSP* in Carlotta is approximately 193 miles and about 4 hours 9 minutes; and, taking 299 to 3 at Hayfork to 36 to GCSP in Carlotta from the same starting point is approximately 136 miles and about 3 hours 22 minutes; so, that's about 57 miles.

*GCSP = Grizzly Creek State Park, a couple miles past Pamplingrove; but Mapquest recognizes it, which makes it easier to map.

I went that way to IRG 2 years ago, it is a great drive except that 5-10 miles of sometimes one lane, and those parts can be 15-20 mph max, in places less. The only problem I had is big pickups going the other way acted like it was their road and you weren't supposed to be their. On the other hand, they were working and I was enjoying the beautiful drive.

We took Hwy 36 on the way home from IRG. Very nice drive, but not for the weak of heart. Lots of turns, couple of steep up and down mountains. Not the kind of road to take if you are in a hurry. Saw 8 deers , one was a doe with a couple of kids. To me it was well worth the drive.

We did one each way. 36 to for 3.5 hrs and 299 home at 4 hrs. 36 was faster!
