... & by new, I mean I'm 2 years behind the trendy guys.

www.fastboyfenders.com is making some purdy fenders and handlebars.

the site doesent look like its been updated ... word is hes making steel frames, now . ( damn )

brooks saddles are also real poppular now, every big-box store has them in stock... used to be you had to look for them.

I can't find brooks saddles in any local LBS. I still have to order that online.

Wooden bike parts? Got a picture?

Organic Bike

There are lots of very cool touring fenders made out of wood too.

His buddies are arguing on bikeforums.net on how safe they are... if at all... LOL. but riding brakeless fixed-gear bikes in traffic, is OK.

My LBS has one and its wild to watch folks look at it. When it registers what the material is, the engineering types really flip out. Natural composite material with vertical load supports. Really boggles the mind knowing current carbon fiber manufactures have no cost effective way to add vertical support inside a tube.

Bamboo is an amazing material. It is strong, and tough, and thanks to the fact that it grows like a weed, it is sustainable.

It probably should not surprise me that someone made a bike out of it.

The real loose canon in the design is the neck and bottom bracket. Since bamboo size are not "standard". Each piece needs to be sized in what appears to be a carbon fiber slug

The drop outs are standard metal parts epoxied into the boo.

This is exceedingly cool, 'till I saw a near $3000 pricetag, for just a frame. I get that it's a verry specialized art, but for bamboo? Wow, the cost must be nearly all labor. It must take FOREVER to make one. Nah, it's the exclusivity markup

wood bicycle parts are nothing new, neither are wood or bamboo frames. they've been around for a hundred years (give or take). I made a pair of rims similar to Campagnolo Shamals a few years back and sold them at local velodrome the first day I brought them there. even the weight weenies thought they were the coolest thing.

Wood rims with wire spokes was common in the first half of the 20th century. I saw this only one time near an old abandoned house, a tree had grow inside the wheel.

Plus, for $3K you can get a REAL state-of-the-art bike. There are lots of things you can do, but should you?

It’s an interesting engineering challenge – kind of like building a canoe out of concrete – you know concrete is an Amazing material (starting to sound familiar?)! I’m pretty sure I could make a bike out of concrete, but I’m not going to.

For $3K, I’d go carbon frame and fork – no there is a composite! Burnt string and glue baby!

Homemade bamboo bike that a bike forum member sees at a rack on a regular basis. Very cool - and very brave at the same time. You must really trust your design. Almost looks like tape wrapped around at the joints.

(I think the U Lock is quite an ironic thing to have on this bike?)

Tape like this is used to join aluminium tubes that are used as foot racks on one-off racing sailing dinghies - usually using carbon cloth in epoxy resin, so it's not just some sticky tape (though a good few layers of duct tape would do wonders....).

Bamboo is a superb structural material - it's so light that you can have really thick-wall tubes for a reasonable weight and so those thick-wall tubes will carry a big load before buckling.
