Tow vehicle

Postby JennieL » Mon Oct 19, 2009 7:54 pm

I am curious what folks use to tow their teardrop. My husband and I recently bought a Little Guy Doublewide, with the intention of pulling it with my Buick Century. However, the Century is starting to nickle and dime us, so we are thinking about getting a newer-used vehicle. I like a 4-door vehicle, we are not interested in a pickup. Thanks for your good advice!

I tow my 3foot wide motomate with an Aveo. I kind of wished I bought an HHR so I could have bought a bigger trailer.

I'm the nutty one !! I actually was looking at Jeeps a few weeks ago and saw that i'd get the same gas mileage as I do with the convertible so I'm sticking with her until I blow her up.

I use an Audi crossover. It is about the size of a Subaru Outback. It functions like a wagon most of the time, but I can do mild offroad driving if I need to.

I prefer it to an SUV for comfort and handling reasons.

If you like Buicks, they have some nice vehicles now. Very competitive with Lexus, IMO. The Enclave is considered a crossover, and I had one for a week (I get press cars for my occupation), and I liked it. It's a bit big for my tastes, but drove nicely. There may be some loyalty deals available -- not sure.

I like some of Subaru's line-up, and also like the Saturn VUE.

The Ford Escape sells well, and gets good revues. Not my cup of tea, but worth considering.

Those are just a few that jump to mind, based on what you currently drive. Going from Buick to Jeep is a pretty major change, IMO.

I tow my Little Guy 4x8 with my 2006 Hyundai Elantra Sedan. The 4x8 weighs 900 lbs and the car is rated for 2000 lbs. Tows great which is good since we are leaving Thurs morning on a 2700 mile round trip to LCG IV. This will be my longest trip yet, duh, but I don't expect any problems (knock on wood) lol.

I agree. I have a Infinity FX35 which is a crossover also. Handles like a car but has storage like a SUV. Actually it handles like a sports car because it has the same platform and engine as the 350Z. Also has a 2500 towing capacity.

Rob lets me tow our Hunter Fat Shadow with my new Toyota FJ Cruiser. You don't even know that you have a trailer back, there it's so smooth. The best part about the Cruiser is that it has NO carpeting to get dirty and plenty of tie-downs in the back and a roof rack. To clean up after a trip you just wipe it down with a damp rag inside.

I had a 2003 Honda CR-V that I loved, but I decided I wanted a truck instead. So I sold the Honda and now I have a 2010 Toyota Tacoma 6 cyl. with tow package. Someday I hope to have a standie and now I have something to pull it with. With the Honda, you knew you were pulling the td especially in the mountains. With the Tacoma, you forget it's back there.

I think I finally figured out how to attach a picture. This was taken at the Wolf Creek Gathering this summer. It's not great but it's the first time Rob let me tow the trailer.

Hi, ladies! I've been reading when I can, but no time to post right now (work is slammin')

I had a 2001 Chevy S10 which towed the Sun Spot just fine, but was getting up there. When they started giving cars away this summer, I traded it in for a 4 cyl. 2009 Jeep Patriot 4x4. The Patriot has been tricked up with transmission and oil coolers and a class II hitch to upgrade the tow rating to 2000 lbs. It gets 23-25 mpg normally, and drops to 22 mpg when I'm towing.

I can feel the trailer a bit more than I could with the pickup, but since I've got a longer hitch now, backing up and positioning the trailer is so much easier! And I'm really loving the Patriot for the rest of my driving: dog hauling is its primary job, and it does that really well.
