Quilt for a Teardrop

My husband and I just got our first teardrop, a homemade 4x8 based on the Trailer for Two design. Since it is so narrow and so long I decided to make my own quilt for it.

My question is how much wider than the mattress should I make the quilt?

Our mattress pad is maybe 3 or 4 inches deep and comes right up to the sides of the trailer, so there isn't any drop on it, but I worried that if I make it just as wide as the trailer then we won't both fit under it.

Any advice would be helpful! Thanks!

If you plan to use it as sleeping cover, it has to be wider than the bed. When you make up the bed, I would imagine you would just turn under the edges.

I use a sleeping bag myself.

My quilt was made 16" wider then the bed. I fold under 8" on each side when I make the bed.

If you make it the size of a double bed quilt you will have plenty of room. Not a comforter that goes to the floor but a quilt..

54" x 75" That will give you more than 6 inches over the >48" of the bed....

Double bed is about right for a queen mattress. For a 4 wide that is a double and a double would be too wide for you. Doug makes his a little smaller, I think, just barely to the edge of the bed on the sides, but I wanted to tuck in some and have more to cover with, as you said , so mine is about 8" wider than the bed on either side. Any more and you just have bunched up fabric. Mine is a little longer on the bottom, so I can actually tuck it UNDER the mattress and it stays in place a little better. But it is quite a job to get it under there in the first place! If I were to do it again, I would probably make the sides 6" wider than the bed. 8 is a tad too much on the sides.

Oh and don't bother with a fancy border. I spent a lot of time on a nice pieced border that I love, but you can't see it cause it's tucked in or covered by pillows!



If your quilt covers the edge, above the door, you might want to consider door skirts, like these. easy to make, and protect your hard work from extra wear.

Thank you for the responses. I'm thinking that an extra six inches on the sides should be enough. Yay more fabric shopping!

I'm working on something like this:

A friend of mine gave me a bunch of pre-cut 4" hearts and I'm appliqueing them to six inch squares. I haven't quilted before, just mostly knitted, so it is an exciting new craft for me.

Oh and I do the same thing as jeremy, I just fold the extra under along the doors, I don't try and tuck it in. Still looks good, no one knows its not tucked in!

I second all the above! We got a full comforter for our queen so that we'd have enough to cover us. But that involves folding under. Plus, think about the length. One of the bedmaking challenges is crawling around in there tucking in at the bottom. I'd make it a bit shorter than standard, personally, so there would be less volume to try and tuck in. You'd have to give some thought to your border then, though.

Debbie your quilt is beautiful. I love to sew and have only made basic quilts. I'm an artist/painter and thought about taking a quilt class this fall so I could learn some tricks of the trade in making more complicated designs.

Joylovesonshine, I love the quilt you're going to make...so colorful! I have a red and white quilt that belonged to a childhood friend that passed away at a young age. I went to the family auction and was thrilled to get her iron bed and quilt her mom had made! I use it in my T@B when I'm solo, but we use a Travasak when DH is along. Unlike you, when DH is along, we don't keep our bed in "bed mode", but ours makes into a U-shaped couch. When solo, I fold the back of the couch down and sleep wheel to wheel.

Are you making curtains to match?

I hadn't thought about curtains. Our tear has stained glass windows so I'm not sure we would need them... Though they might be good to keep the light out.

There are some pics of the trailer in my gallery, but you can't really see the glass all that well. This one

does it a little better justice. The back is mostly open with green stripes around the edges. I didn't do them, they came with the trailer.
