DEPOT

Lets talk tiny houses, tumbleweeds etc on wheels

Re: DEPOT

Postby bobhenry » Mon Apr 09, 2018 2:58 am

Well Sunday was the best day this weekend so I put in 8 hours and got the other bump out framed in and the big 27 lite fixed window installed. Woke up Monday morning ( my last day off) to about an inch and a half of new snow. The Hell with it I will get the framing skinned today one way or the other. When this is done the entire tiny will be weathered in. It will still need the steel roof installed and the exterior finish sided but I can heat the inside to at least work on the electrical during our May and June blizzards :rofl2:

Friday My helper and I installed the v grove recycled siding on the front of the Depot. It is complete nose to tail and just 1/2 way up the wall. Saturday and Sunday were cold blustery days so we retreated inside out of the wind. We removed the 2nd 4th and 6th bottom member of the roof trusses. There are now 3 open and airy sections ( I refuse to call them rooms). The roof line was sub framed to accommodate a modified vaulted roof line.
We were also able to get about 1/2 of the tiny wired for 120 ac With duplex outlets. It is nice to have power here and there now instead of a single extension cord to work from. We also got a very tiny start on installing the 4" polyiso' foil faced ridged insulation in the wall cavities. It was a very productive weekend. Oh I splurged and spent another $7.50 on construction screws. I need to update my costs to date.

April 22nd and 23rd

Entire roof is insulated with 4" foil faced polystyrene billets and 3/4 of the electric has been ran. Side wall stud cavities are filled with the 4" poly insulation as well.
Had 2 little electrified dietz lanterns that have been hung at the pooch out entry door flanking both sides. It is starting to get a railroad personality. We still have Monday
to make some more strides. (update ) Monday was windy cold and crappy so I stuffed a few cavities with the 4" and installed two
4 foot track lights for temporary lighting to work by. Gave up and called it a day.

The Depot received a present. As I was taking my helper back to Lafayette we went thru a tiny hamlet where the week before they were having a clear out sale of a big old school building. Frank remembered I wanted an arrival departure board for the depot and had me stop. They were there shuffling stuff out and when we asked about a chalk board they had a small 3 x 4 section of the heavy as hell old slate blackboard. It was marked $100.00 we got it for $10.00. I think they just want stuff gone.

Mothers day was 3 days in Kentucky to visit with mom ! so no progress on the depot.

I did have Monday and the grass was up to my a## so I got busy manicuring my lawn area up by the barn and caboose/depot spot.

Next weekend the 18th - 20th is the spring Hoosier gathering so yet another play weekend.

I am gonna get lazy if this persists.

Oh I did hit a yard sale and bought a nice lock set with deadbolt for $10.00 better get that purchase recorded.

Spring gathering was great ! Met some nice new folks who were ready to go tiny and give up their rolling McMansion. Did get home mid day Sunday and with my helpers assistance we finally got all the scrap fencing bailed up and ready for a scrapper to pick up. Monday was an all day garden tilling day starting with fixing the flat tire on the tiller. We then ran it in shifts for over 4 hours. The 30' x 100'+ garden is about 1/2 tilled and the bedding plants are in the ground finally.

Well the largest portion of the garden is now in place a little rain and we will be off to the races. Spent a 7 hour day installing 4" billets of foil faced polyiso'' insulation. Cut and filled about 1/2 of the total sidewalls. The 4" plus the 1" that was backer on the zip left a small void in the 2x6 walls for the electrical wiring. Have a punch out list that is now outlined on a 28 x 42 white board mounted to the wall. It seems that 3 or 4 get done and 5 or 6 more pop up. These Tiny 's are never finished.

Well game was called on account of rain. A nice sweet gentle all day rain falling softly on the garden that was just completed. Spent the day inside the depot shoveling out foam scraps and construction trash. Went into the caboose and gathered the tools and odd duck unneeded crap to get everything a bit more organized. It is as if the caboose grew 40 more sq ft. There just might be something to this minimalization ! :D

Re: DEPOT

Postby bobhenry » Tue Jun 19, 2018 7:09 am

Ok set down I didn't even believe this one....... Stopped at a yard sale when I saw some PVC fencing. Turned out I knew the homeowner. He was one of works temporary call in substitute drivers. We visited and I finally got around to asking him about the fencing. He asked me to make an offer so I said $50.00. He told me another fellow had made the same offer earlier so that must be a fair price but since it was me the price was $40.00. I had a truck full of odds and ends so I handed him the cash but explained I would need to come back by and pick it up. When I arrived he informed me he could have made us a profit as he had to turn down two $100.00 offers and one for $150.00. I thanked him be being true to his offer and got the 12 post 10 panels and all the nifty accessories loaded and as I was about to leave with it I got a $100.00 offer. I agreed to deliver it for that price however her husband nixed the deal so the 16 by 22 foot kitchen garden at the land ladys now has a nice 16 x 24 foot fence. I couldn't stand it and had to know so I priced the pieces and parts new thru one of the box stores web sites and I came up just over $700.00. It sure looks nice !

The next morning I knew the rich folk were having a community yard sale so my helper and I took some time to goof off and go shopping. First stop was a very nice queen mattress for the shelf bed in the depot. Yep it was FREE. After loading the heavy monster we continued looking and found 4 boxes of Windwood hardwood laminate flooring. I asked the bleary eyed homeowner who was still trying to set up how much. He entertained an offer and I said $25.00 which he accepted. I paid him as fast as I could get the cash out of my pocket. His wife was soon at his elbow explaining it should be at least $50.00. He told her sorry the deal was made and we shuffled of to load our new found treasure. Again, I was curious so when I got home I looked on line to see just what I had ! At $65.00 a box that $260.00 worth of flooring for $25.00 looked like the deal of the century.

So the landlady has my rent in the form of sweat equity for putting up her fence. The depot has a super nice mattress for the shelf bed and as soon as the construction phase of the build is done there will be a very nice floor installed. I love free and dirt cheap is nice also :D

Bob, Your latest build, has shown me how much materials have gone up in price! Last week, I needed some galv lathe screws on a patio project, just like the ones I used to install the inside paneling on my Weekender-XL and what used to cost me $5.50 at Lowes was now nearly $7.50 a box- steel tariff increase-- except the tariff hadn't even got started yet!-- thieves! Then out of curiosity I looked at the 3/8" plywood I used on the outer walls of my build and it had gone up from $17 a sheet to $27 a sheet. I realized why my Weekender adv on Craigslist a couple months ago had 8 calls/emails and it sold in 3 days for the full price I was asking. I would need $500 more now in materials to build it, plus where would I get my Harbor freight trailer now? Not new, because they are no longer sold anymore, so it's going to take a search for a nice used one now.
I may never be able to afford to do another build again- I hear on old song in my head now-- Bet you know it Bob--

MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
Oh no!

As a construction estimator we live this every day. I did a 2.3 million bid on just the framing package of a 5 story apartment building and the war with Canada started. It shot the material price up 13% in the blink of an eye. The days of isolationism are over. Someone needs to understand we are a world market and it is much easier to deal with friends than adversaries.

Well almost 8 hours each for my helper and myself. All the ceiling drywall nailers are installed all the window and doorway headers and drywall nailers are in. The water tank access panel is fully insulated and the interior skins are installed. Even cut a hole and shoved thru the air conditioner over the head of the shelf bed. It sure doesn't look like a lot but is is ready to start installing the big sheets and that will go quick. If the rain holds off we might even get some of the steel roofing installed. Then back to work Tuesday
