registering a tiny house

Postby droid_ca » Tue Jan 29, 2013 2:23 am

So I have a neighbor that works at the weigh scales ad he gave me this piece of advice if I want to build a tiny house and not get harassed by the weight of the house and the tow vehicle that is pulling it to get my trailer registered as a U-built trailer when I have the floor on and take it in just as that they will issue you a small utility trailer plate (here in BC anyways) instead of a recreational trailer plate and then the house portion is classified as your load. So no more pesky pulling over to a weigh station and having to comply with the gvw of your vehicle as it will go with the gvw of the trailer instead. I hope this works everywhere but if not it works here in BC

Sounds similar to how I registered my first homebuilt teardrop in Pennsylvania. Got it inspected and registered while it was a flat utility trailer, and then just built a teardrop on top of it. Much easier!

AAA digest of travel trailers and laws regarding weigh stations.

Info for Canada at the end of the list.

It's geared more for the RV RV trailer.

As I thought, Iowa is all vehicles 10,000lbs and over must weigh. Used to be 6,000 lbs but vehicles like the Hummer H1 were over that and really should have been stopping at all open scales.
