I will be working on the stove this weekend. I will go for the soldering of the crack. I just got to go to Radio Shack and get some fine solder. All I have is plumbing solder and it is thick for what I need.

Saftey first that is true. But this tank I have had in vinigar for a week. And has been in a barn for five years. I do not think there is a problem with old fule. But then my wife ensured me she uped my life insurance if that happened.

Kevin...how did the vinegar work on it? I find that it cuts the tarnish pretty quickly. 0000 Steel wool also work wonders once the big stuff is off to polish it up. Doug

Vinegar and steel wool 0000 works great. But I forgot to wear rubber gloves my hands are still black. I have used everything even gas and it will not cut it. Rubber gloves are going into my fix it box for sure.

Well I got my tank repaired. It dose not look very good but that part will be by to stove

It may not be real pretty Kevin...but you saved the stove. I didn't try to take my valve assy off my tank. I couldn't see any threads on the shaft of it and thought it best to just leave it if it worked. My tank is also attached to the support straps permanently unlike yours. So how goes the rest of the resto. work? Doug

I got the first coat of paint on it yesterday. It is coming along. I pressure tested the tank and not leaks. Now all I have to do is sand repaint and polish the brass. I got scared and had to take off my valve assy. I thought that the lift tube had got hot and dropped. In checking it was only the solder that fell in the tank during the repair.


It dose not look as good as yours yet but I do hope that it will with another coat of paint and lots of polish.

Great job!!! It's really looking good! Amazing how these things can clean up and operate after decades of neglect, with a little effort. Doug

Make sure you do a good pressure test on the tank before you put fuel in it. I would pump it up & leave it over night. Then dunk it in water for a while.

Also, My wife does stained glass work & you can get brass pint pens to touch-up the solder.
