Repaint or touchup info.

I had scorched my really nice stove up at Cave Creek cooking dinner. It really bugged me that I had done that. I pulled the top off the stove and took it in to the paint supplier the other day. They have a binder with just about every shade of paint you could think of in there. I matched up what I thought was a good one, had them mix it into a rattle can in single stage paint. I also had them put a splash of flattening agent into it so that the gloss would match.

I only painted the 2 sides visible on the box, all the rest top interior etc... is original color. Didn't clean the grease off the inside left flap however. I think it's a really good match so if you want to do touch up work that's a really good way to go in my opinion. Here's the before pic, bottom right stove.

Here's the after. I think someone would be hard pressed to really pick out much difference on it. Coleman had lots of various shades of green the flap is the original color. Doug

What I did for a counter measure Rich is to take a piece of .040 aluminum, put a 90 in it, trimmed it to fit under the grate resting on the stove bottom. (it's removable). It keeps the flames about 1/4" away from the sides now. Hopefully that air cushion will prevent future scorchings. However, I think I'll just leave that big skillet at home next time....just in case. Doug, does the acrylic enamel hold up on the vent tops of lanterns? The 220J I bought today looks like it is ceramic or something. It's chipped and looks rather thick for paint.

No Jeff! That is porcelainized steel on the tops. Pretty much what you got is what you got unless you get the top resurfaced, or you can find a better ventilator on E-bay or a parts lantern, (cheaper way to go). The top temps will run over 500F and will cook off paint. I've been looking for some colored hi-temp paints but haven't found one that is the correct color, and they aren't a gloss. If found, they also won't be as thick as the original coating and will show as a divot. If you aren't going to burn it, you could do bondo and a repaint for a decorative lantern. Sorry....Doug

Ah ha!! That makes more sense than paint. Yep, they'll probably stay the way I bought them, I just hope I can get them to be CAMPWORTHY and use them.

Jeff...once you get them in working order, just drag them out after dusk. The bright light will keep anyone from seeing the tops on them anyway! Almost any of the older ones will have a chip in the top and if it doesn't, the guys on E-bay make a special mention about that. It doesn't need to be dinged to cause a chip either. Through a number of heat and cooling cycles they can lift the coating, or so I'm told from the Coleman forum. Doug

I'm waiting for a reply from these guys about refinishing the ventilators. Probably a bit pricey but we'll find out!

There is a place that will do them for about $35.00 each. I'll see if I can find the name.

That was the place I had read about. I was told it was about $35 to do the vent.
