Mark....it smells like someone put some unleaded gas in it with that old MTBE and it has gone stale...not that coleman fuel type smell....it has an air leak somewhere. It's all in pieces now, fount is in great shape, may not paint. Doug

Man get that stuff washed out!! I had a nasty surprise last night, Thought I would fire up that really nice 1954 228 lantern I found on craigslist a while back. Turns out someone was using gasoline in it last when it was put away 20-30 years ago. The lantern is virtually cemented together with dried up gasoline. Broke the needle valve just trying to shake it off seat enough to get some cleaner in to loosen it up. Had to remove the screw from the fuel cap to screw the outer half off. took a pair of pliers and considerable force to remove the insert and gasket after that!! decided to soak it a few days before trying to remove any more parts. :(

About time. I bet it is the fuel gasket. It looks like the same size as your 242.

It looks like the grate is in good shape. How wide is the grate?

7.25" point to point on the grate. I've got the brass polished up, steel/iron parts are in the carb cleaner to clean off the carbon. New cap gasket. I'll go out and give them a brush with a fine stainless brush, Gen. looks to be in great shape, It was taken apart at least once in it's life. Late model 51. Doug

According to a couple people on the Coleman forums, that burner is stronger than the main burner on your 425 or 413.
