My 413D stove

Postby BK » Sun Jan 18, 2009 6:56 pm

You have all got me hooked on vintage camping equipment. At Christmans
I got lucky, here's the short story. Our family has a $1 gift exchange and
my brother in law had my other brother in laws name. He got this 413D
stove at a local auction. Since they live in San Diego, CA he couldn't
take it home and didn't want it shipped. I offered to take it off his hands
and he was more then happy to get rid of it. After alot of sanding, cleaning and painting I got myself a good looking stove. I don't think this will be the last project.

Whoa Dude!!!! What a great job on that resto! It had some fairly serious rust on it. I really like those flat ended tanks. Wonderful job on that one, what's cool, it's a nearly 60 year old stove. Built a fire in it yet?   Doug

No fire yet, I'll let you know how I make out. I need to get fuel and a new
filler cap.

My niece accused me of the same thing. She said it was two different
stoves.

Good idea John!

I have my dad's old stove waiting on restoration, so I'd love to see pictures and hear more about the process as well.

I mostly followed the manual from Old Town Coleman Center & Museum
(www.oldtownyucca.com/coleman/). The case had major rust inside and out as you could see. I started by removing all the old paint using a fine
wire wheel attached to my drill. After the paint was off I used 2" Rolloc
Grinding Discs to get the worst of the rust off. Then I switched to 2"
3M Rolloc Scotch Brite Pads (07480). Inside I didn't worry to much about
making it perfect, just got the worst of the rust off. On the outside I used
Bondo glazing & spot putty on the pits and griding marks. I used
Rust-Oleum Professional Primer (it dries faster and fills better). For the
case color I used Rust-Oleum satin hunter green (7732). For the fuel tank
I sanded with 120 then 400 grit paper. That got most of the rust off. I did
not prime the tank. The paint is Rust-Oleum metallic burnished brass. On
the grill I used the wire wheel for the rust. I painted it with Rust-Oleum
high heat bar-b-q black. On the burners & manifold I used the wire wheel
and sanded with 400 paper and painted with Rust-Oleum high heat silver.
On all the brass just used 0000 steel wool and buff. The best part of the
rebuild was when I got my new Coleman decal from Old Town Coleman,
I was like a kid in a candy store. It's alot of elbow grease, dust and paint fumes but, when it's done it's all worth it. Don't forget to always wear a good dust mask with a minimum rating of N95.

It's a metal tank painted gold/brass.

Here's one for .99 cents on Ebay:

Now the kicker, $30.00 for shipping.
