Count Me In - I Got A Turd

Lanterns, stoves, etc... anything old!

After replacing the broken glass and reading a bunch of stuff about people using their lanterns as cabin heaters, I have pressed the turd into service in the shop helping to supplement heat and light during my TPCE build.

Scan down though these posts to see some more burn pictures.

Something I have noticed on shut down, and am wondering if it is normal, is that on closing the valve the flame tends to dim down just before closing, and then on closing lights back up and burns for what seems like a moderate time before burning out. Is this normal?

Thanks for looking. I'm loving the lantern. It just adds a really nice ambiance (and a couple of degrees of warmth to a cold shop!).

A bunch of mine does that. or other strange things. Some will go dim, dimmer, barely there. Some are like yours. Just their personalities

Someday I shall find a turd in the wild. Then I might start talking about quitting

I'll see your Turd, and raise you a carrying case.....

Forgot I had this in the shed until reading this thread.
Had to rob the cap off of this, so now it pressures up. Just need mantles.

By the way, is anyone interested in this stove? Got it from my neighbor. I just wanted the fuel cap off it.
I'll post more picks in the "For Sale" section.

Occurs to me now that the most common TIG electrodes are (were) 2/ct thoriated tungsten... red color code, and now they are phasing these out so that us poor welder types won't be poisoned while sharpening our tips and burning in some beads (as if the smoke and metal fumes are safe w/o the thorium).

Seems that the "bug and bunny brigade" has their hand in everything. When I worked at Giant Vac (now defunct) they made a big deal out of the steel alloys that were designated as "L" for the meager percent of lead that was alloyed in to help with "free machining". Typical over reaching of gov dept.'s and spending.

Corollary to my time at Nutron designing lamps: that industry has shied away from floor standing fixtures because of the liability of them tipping over, especially now that lead can no longer be used as a cheap ballast weight. They are just too unwieldy to make or ship with other weights, and US makers can not compete with China where there are no reg's for the children salvaging lead out of scrap shipped there from the US.

I am sure that someone will correct my misconception on this subject, but that is the way that I understand it to date.
