Optimus 1200 Kerosene Lantern

Lanterns, stoves, etc... anything old!

Optimus 1200 Kerosene Lantern

Postby Duwammer » Wed Jul 03, 2013 1:27 pm

Several years ago I picked up (2) of these Optimus 1200 lanterns made in Germany brand new in the box along with some other older coleman lanterns.

I never read or see anyone talking about kerosene lanterns. Does anyone use these lanterns or are they merely just collector items.

Well I was partially wrong. The globe says made in West Germany the actual lantern says made in Sweden.

Nice looking lanterns. Most of us are into the Coleman lanterns because the were made in the USA and parts are easy to find. IMHO kerosene can be a pain in the butt because of the pre-heating.

Those are cool. They should polish up nicely.

Those are very good lanterns. They can be a pain to get running but they burn very bright once you get them dialed in. I would love to have one in my collection some day.

Those are wonderful lanterns. I have a clone made somewhere. My guess is China or at least asia. They are bright and so much chrome they put 1950's autos to shame. There are special mantles for them but the large ones meant for Coleman work. Need some kerosene. Not fancy lamp oil but get a gallon jug near the paint supplies in local hardware stores will get you going. ( I use kerosene from a pump ) And some alcohol from the local hardware store also. Ace should have it. You don't want to use rubbing alcohol, it has to much water and may not get hot enough. You will need a little bottle to put the alcohol in the pre heat cups as it is very hard to disassemble the lantern to do that after the mantle has been burned in.
