Coleman Lantern/Stove Storage

Lanterns, stoves, etc... anything old!

Coleman Lantern/Stove Storage

Postby len19070 » Mon Nov 25, 2013 7:15 am

Every year I put my Coleman stuff away I always run them out of fuel and store them with the gas cap off and stuff a Kleenex in the fuel opening and I have never had a problem lighting an appliance the next year. Just something my Dad showed me years ago.

And every time I buy a Lantern/Stove at a yard sale they've got fuel in them and don't work. A cleaning and a new Generator usually fix's things.

What is it that spoils a Generator? Stale fuel? Time? Heat? Metal fatigue? Dirt? ...........

Happy Trails

My experience Len is all of the above. Regular gas is also a culprit . I think dry storage like you do is the best way. I dont always do it, but it is good.

Len, you know that you can re-build the gennys right? They will run on regular gas, but it’s hard on the generators and the ethanol is not good either. I de-fuel my lanterns, leave the fuel cap loose and crack open the valves so the air & fuel tube spring is not compressed. I have a wide long wire shelf up high in my office above my desk. That's where I store my lanterns. I really need to add a second one because the first is so stuffed that it sags a little. In case of a power outage I have my choice of lanterns to light.

What good is a Coleman Lantern/stove with no fuel in it?

Apparently it is very good, you can polish it and put stickers all over it and sell on e-bay for big bucks . :?

Thanks for all the responses.

I'm basically a Kerosene guy but hey, When ya gotta see in the dark...ya gotta go Gas.

I'm sure this has happened to many,

You go to a yard sale, held by 2 folks in there 60's,

They tried camping years ago, bought all the stuff, used it once and decided it wasn't for them and now years later there selling a Stove & Lantern that has only been used once.

There absolutely Pristine and for sale.....And there full of 30 year old fuel!

Happy Trails

2 weeks ago I bought a 220K at an estate sale. Full of fuel. Looks like it had barely burned in the original set of mantles 35 some years ago. It burned that fount of fuel just fine after I put new mantles on. Works like a champ. Have burned a couple of founts of fuel since then.
