How high will it go? Way out of my price range already.

Something doesn't smell right with that one. If you'll notice the underside of the ventilator has the appearance of being well used. Hardly what should be expected for an unfired lantern. I suspect this one has been repainted and polished to appear as new. There are many fake gold bonds showing up on Ebay these days.

I don't know much about lanterns. Why is that so expensive? Is it a collectors item or something or extremely rare? It's not something you would buy for use is it?

They were a special edition that are rarer than the std. red, green or blue 200A. They're crazy expensive because the Japanese (maybe even southeast Asian) market goes nuts over then. This also tends to bring out the fakers hoping to take advantage of that market. I'm not saying that this one is a fake, but there have been many; some that are listed as "recreations", others not so much.

If I had one I would light it and use it. That's what they are for, after all, and my collection isn't so vast that I can keep shelf queens and burners, both. YMMV.

The winning bid was $960.50, if I remember correctly.

I wondered about that one too. 2/73 is a correct date. I don't think it was a fake, but the vent was obviously used before. The burner cage and everything looks NOS to me and not cleaned up or polished. The Coleman decal is correct. The original decal has a larger red R, a smaller vent and smaller collar than on replacement decals. The only thing I can think of is that the ventilator was used on a different lantern. It would have sold for $200 to $400 without the original box probably. The original box is extremely rare to find. Look close at the decal if you want to know if it has been repainted. The photos in that auction do show a slight watermark around the decal. I hope my advice is helpful.
