Sealing a kerosene lantern tank

Postby scottinwv » Sun Oct 02, 2016 6:52 pm

I have an old Feuerhand lantern which sat for years on the vanity in the bathroom as a backup in case of power outage. Came home to find the counter covered in kerosene after the tank leaked. Is there any easy way to seal a tank or is it just a display piece now?

Thanks in advance,

Scott

Leaking from a seam or pin hole from rust?

Bottom seam. I'm hoping there is some sealer that the kerosene wouldn't destroy, I don't want to destroy the exterior patina. If it can't be sealed, it will just be a dry lantern on a display rail in the kitchen.

Use a fuel tank sealer. YouTube has many videos on just about all brands on the market.

If it was a pin hole I would suggest soldier. I have repaired a few tractor tanks that way.

I was of the impression that typical tank sealing coatings were intended to seal raw steel against rust, not intended, nor capable of forming any significant pressure seal; but I would be happy to be shown otherwise. 8)

I've used JB Weld epoxy for metal on many fuel tanks.
\
Magnesium on chain saws
Plastic for a hedge trimmer
Plastic saddle tanks on a pickup
Steel on a 60 gallon diesel tank for a large truck

Success is from good surface prep. Solvents to remove old remains. rough up the surface. Clean with soap and water. Kepp the repair warm

Gas tanks for vintage motorcycles are frequently repaired using interior coating. Try searching Red Coat. Stay away from Kream as folks have problems with that, for some reason.

Why have you not considered solder? That was probably the way the tank was originally built.

If that is a wick lamp you should not have much problem sealing it. JB weld is wonderful stuff.
