Coleman Butane Lantern?

Postby Alfred » Sat Mar 24, 2018 12:29 pm

Hey gang,

I bought this off EBay, mostly because I had not seen one like this before. Supposedly, it is a Coleman product. Anyone know the history of this model?

Thanks!

I have not ever seen one like this. It would surprise me if it was a Coleman product. What led you to believe it was?

Well, umm, the EBay seller advertised it as "Vintage Coleman." Fake news? AL

I will not say he pulled your leg, all I will say is I have never seen a Coleman like this. I have a Primus lantern that is somewhat like this but it uses a propane tank. Yours look foreign to me. Hopefully someone else will come along and verify what it is. It's fun, no matter what it is.

Huh. It’s got ‘Caveat Emptor’ stamped on the bottom? LOL!

Well I don't know what you paid for it, but it may be more valuable then your average Coleman propane lantern. Plus it is not common. If you can get it to burn you might have a nice collectible.

If you paid more then you are comfortable with, you could message the sender and show him he miss represented this lantern and ask for your money back.

$10 plus shipping. I was the only bidder. So, it’s worth it as conversation piece.

I just enlarged the photo, and answered my own question. It’s Canadian Coleman!Image

That is a good deal. Part of my collection are lantern's that I have never seen before. I bought a wall mounted lamp fixture that I had never seen before and was wall mounted which is not what I collect. But it was unique and 15 bucks. I brought it home and did some investigating and found it was a Tilley, from England I believe. I put it up for auction, with the proceeds going to St. Jude Children's Hospital. It sold for 250.00. Sometimes you just have to trust your instincts, and not spend more then you are comfortable with losing. More often then not you will win.

Well there you have it. But it says "Distributed by" , which may mean it is not made by them but sold under licensing by Coleman. Either way it's a fun piece.

Many years ago, a friend gave me an old, beat up fiddle. They were at a garage sale at the end of the day, and the sellers had thrown it in the garbage. They knew I was a musician so they gifted me with it. I cleaned it up, put strings on it, turned out it was worth around $800. I sold it for $500 to a fellow was happy to get a great deal on it. I gifted my friend back a finders fee, everyone was a winner!
