It looks like some come with a mattress and that almost doubles the price. A few days ago there was one on Ebay for ~$50.

explorer boxes

All this talk got me to thinking. After a while an idea came to mind. Then it took form. Thank God for Sketchup.

I dimensioned the image some so you could get an idea as to size. Top comes down clam-shell fashion over the base, so the towing package would be around 5' tall. With the top up you'd have close to 6' of head room. Solid sides, no canvas.

No, I'm not building this, just posting it for the group's amusement.

Interesting, I like the idea of a hardsided popup.

Here is the profile of a softsided popup I've started to play with.

Schaney - that's a nice profile. Grasshopper-like, but with a curve. Very nice in fact.

Tents that "breath" are comfortable but I don't like canvas when it gets wet, hence the attraction to hard sides. My idea is really just a variation of the Winter Warrior hatch, and some of Andrew's work. If someone actually uses it, so much the better.

Thanks, I always liked the Grasshopper profile, then some of the recent off-road profiles posted looked nice too, so I blended them.

I actually played with a few hardsided popup versions of it also, but I didn't like the look when up. When it finally gets built, it will most likely have a fabric popup. There are some newer breathable tent fabrics out there that are a substantial improvement over "standard" tent canvas if you have a lot of rain to deal with. Although they are a bit pricey.

With the inside of the E-Box at the correct sitting height , you almost wouldn't need a tent, except for a stretch...??? 3 feet is probably plenty , leaves alot of shelf material out of a sheet of ply ...??? Then there's always the "utility" function...

I normally figure the minimum head room for a 6' person to sit at 36", unless you're claustrophobic  One advantage of an end tent would be screened windows for ventilation

36" that's the figure we came up with ... Plenty of room for sleeping /watching TV/whatever...then there's always outside... :)

Your thinking is along the lines of my unit. Cargo box with galley and restroom (possible shower). No internal space for sitting, howeer.

Here is a sketchup of what I am working on. Shown mounted on the utility trailer.

My album has a little more detail. I almost finished the framing this weekend, but did not yet grab additional pics. Additional photos will be added as I progress.

Reminds one of a Caboose ... that would be an interesting design challenge that would have some real space considerations with a nostalgic look to it too ... http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl= ... l%26sa%3DN

Have you seen the Roughout Products trailer? It's a very small, off-road pop-up. Inside is just for sleeping, no dinette, cabinets or toilets. Exterior pullouts contain a cooktop and storage. Interesting design, but better use Firefox to view their website: www.roughoutproducts.com

I reckon on 36" sitting headroom measured from the middle of any cushion, to account for 'squish'.

Interesting design, I like the slide-out stove setup.
