New to site... Neon-Lite in progress

Postby groys02 » Wed Jun 25, 2008 2:16 pm

Greetings all! Love the site, and all the ideas. I recently was parting out a 97 4dr Neon, and got the idea to cut it in two just forward of the rear doors & then fabricate a rounded nose with EMT & misc auto sheetmetal. Figure a false floor partway up the trunk, with the upper part then a smallish galley. Lots of MIG-welding, so not for all, I know... but work's been slow (self-employed bodyman).
I just got the front skinned in, so the body's "stiff" again... now lots of welds to grind & finish, and filler to apply to smooth things up before priming. THEN I can take it off the jig and try pulling it around behind my regular Neon and see how good the road manners are before trimming out the interior. Probably take it to the local CoOp and weigh it as well--I'm hoping it's 600-800 lbs, but not at all sure. One pic from a week ago:

Thankyou... I did put 5 pics (so far) in my modest personal album:

I should have quite a few more shortly... I'll be installing a front awning window today (I hope), made from a generic sun roof salvaged from yet another Neon... installed with what was the forward-facing hinged edge at the top, so that when its opened, there's a modest opening along the bottom... breeze without paranoia, should an overnite shower hit.
Hopefully frame in the wooden pieces for supporting a level floor this weekend, with a removable section of that where the car's rear footwell was... so as to sit upright inside on rainy days.
