Pop-Up Truck Campers

I have been looking at some designs for pop-up truck campers.

The designs use scans of Dodge truck plans so they're too big to put on my web site - if anyone wants them in pdf (1-2 Mb each), email me and I'll send them to you. There are dxfs to download, but they don't contain the scans.

It kinda depends on how you look at it.

Because I grew up in shipbuilding and then moved to boatbuilding, I draw things facing to the right (believe it or not, where I trained you drew merchant ships facing one way and military ships the other way!). But Dodge draws trucks facing to the left, so I flipped the image. Seemed obvious to me.....

So Mike, does all of Detroit draw facing to the left. (Are you pinko commie-lovers or sumping?)

Facing Left, facing Right...makes no difference to me.

But on the pop-up truck camper, there used to be one built called "Alaskan Camper" that was a pop up. It was sort of rounded on top and looked really well built, but small. I always wanted one of those because they looked so cool, sort of like a teardrop.

Anyone seen an Alaskan lately?

What the problem really is

You are facing a European convention of "Right Angle Projection". This is the standard in Europe and we are exactly opposite! :? Makes things confusing when you are working with a mix of US and European drawings. Cheers.

I see one every so often, I think the guy lives on the other side of town near the Wal Mart. I don't know the guy, but I can probably get a pic from the street if you want one.

I've got a Skamper for my truck, it has soft sides on the top 1 1/2' - 2' when the top is up.

Jeff,

I think it would be cool to see one again....haven't seen one in many years.

Edit: Looks like they are still being built. http://www.alaskancamper.com/

The management was shocked to receive complaints about the presentation of the truck campers drawings, so there's now some Mark 2 versions with the trucks drawn all fancy - see illustration above.

This has enabled me to include the design of the trucks in the pdfs too.

Finally remembered to bring my camera and get the pics. It's an older one, and looks like it'sseen a hail storm or two.

Thanks, Jeff. Yep, that's definately an Alaskan Camper, and a big one at that. I always thought they were a cool idea, but once I priced one, they were way out of my range.

They look like they would be pretty heavy, but I'm sure that it would be warmer than my Skamper with it's canvas sides.

As always, Very Nice!!! If it weren't for that sticker on the door of my 2003 S10 stating that it should not be used for a camper, I'd almost build one of the smaller ones. ;) Seriously, as I look at that design, I wonder if anyone has thought of a Tiny Travel Trailer with a similar design like a Hi-Lo? Something that would fit on the HF 4x8 or Red Trailers 5x8 bolt-together trailer.

Yeah, Ron, when I first saw that I was so impressed - proper clever lateral thinking (like wot I can't do).

BUT, it has 'tight' dimensions in several places - if you can afford to build a prototype before you make your 'real' one and also make jigs to build the 'real' one on, then it's fine, but I decided it would be too difficult to build a one-off and get it to fold and seal correctly.
If you want to prove me wrong, I'd be happy to draw out something similar... 8)
