Bowtop Vard0 Questions

Postby amvet1944 » Mon Jul 04, 2011 9:57 am

I want to lightly paint the canvas of our 2008 built Bowtop. Any suggestions? Is this a good idea? Also I want to build the scrolled horseshoe end caps for our Vardo. Do you use 1x8's and cut several peices to make the horseshoe?

Gary,

On the painting of your roof I would say it depends on what is under neath it. If you are stretched between spars then the canvas becomes wet and may sag and dry. Paint may not be that flexible and when it dries you may have cracks every where.

Why are you painting it? If want to waterproof it they make stuff that waterproofs but maintains flexibility. Think scotchgard.

As far as the horseshoes you can try 1"x12"'s or do glue up. If you are painting it you might use mdf instead.

Thanks Rick. I never thought about it cracking, good point. I think I will try 1x12s. Thanks Gary

I agree on the flexable covering, I do however disagree on the MDF. That stuff is a water magnet and delaminating sawdust isn't a pretty sight. Doug
