FAUX-Sheperds hut (I hope)

Postby planzman » Tue Sep 18, 2012 8:17 am

At last I have begun my quest for building a simple travel trailer.
although it may not be tiny, it will be unique.

My interest in building a trailer started over a conern with staying both warm and secure from the native bears while deer hunting. Last year I tent camped from around 15 Oct through around 15 Jan. That is ... I set up the tent in Oct and took it down in Jan. I (we) camped almost every Fri-Sat night (I think I only missed 2 weekends) and both my sons complained about getting out of a warm sleeping bag into the open early dawn air inside a cold tent.

My studies of various models where piqued by a guy name Paleotool and his great "Vardo". I like the simple (to me) design and his use of basicly a warm and dry interior, using a wood stove. his design is "dry". In that is has not source of water, other than what you have in a bottle or bucket.

In my quest for both warm and dry, you get kinda of grimey sitting around the fire and then hunting all day. We decided that some kind of shower would be great. Our deer camp does not have water or electricity, so we would need to have a trailer that had a way of moving water (pump) from an exterior water tank (or interior holding tank) and a way to heat it.
I looked any many methods, indluding just puting a pot onthe stove and use the battry powered shower pumps you see on the internet.

We search high and low and missed many great (not really) cheap trailers that we could clean up and use. A day late and a dollar short, is my apparent method of buying anything. :x

So, we finally gave up the search and found an interesting chasis for sale. this is an old Shasta 18 foot, not sure the year, but the steps say Shasta on them.

So we got it for around $200, too much, maybe, but we are happy with it. the tale was that it belong to the sellers grand parents and some body broke in vandalized it so bad, they just busted it up and he kept the chassis for general use. it has sat outside for some time and all the wood is rotton or badly weathered. We started prying it up last night. But first we took many :pictures: to dosument the factory sub floor for reference.

Today we are having a monsoon, so now real work to be done, so we get to do some planning.

I like this basic design but not sure how to best use my chasis.

More research.

I found that what we have been calling a "Vardo"...may acutally be a Sheperds Hut.

Seems there are lots of ways to frame a travel trailer.

so, in keeping with my discussion of a simple design that is marginally portable. I live about 20 miles from camp.
I have started with this design.

Hi planzman,

Vardos are neat but it looks like the Shepherd's Hut style is
more a match to your needs - much simpler and straightforward.

Here's a really neat German take on their version of a shepherd's
hut. Small, basic and with a rustic charm.

brings up a non-English site.]

But also check out Ice [Fishing] shack/Shanty/House on Google
for design/build methods.

Cheers,

I LOVE the Schaefer Wagen's. Simple, elegant beauty. Doesn't look like it would be too hard to construct either.

acquisition of a hulk

Postby planzman » Wed Sep 26, 2012 10:58 am

Craigslist provided us with a used 18 foot Shasta frame.

Story was that it belonged to his grandparents, and someone vandalized the camper, so they broke it up and has been using the frame as a tandem axle trailer for a couple of years. You can see that the plywood subfloor is rotten.

Ra lttle elbow grease

Postby planzman » Wed Sep 26, 2012 11:04 am

So My son and i removed all the bad plywood, and the 2 x 2 subflooing and i ground off most of the surface rust and he primed it late yesterday.

that rear bumper is going to be cut off and replaced, it is so rusty, that I am not sure what is keeping it on the frame.
primed rear.jpg

ran out of primer before we ran out of frame. When he was buying the paint, he picked a can of White instead of black, so did not get it pained yesterday. So today, while he was returning the paint, he got a spray can of primer and covered that are by the gas tanks and tongue. We removed and discarded the holding tank and existing plumbing. this will be a fresh build and we wanted all new plumbing, perhaps using PEX or is it PECS to be more winter tolerant. Also, we will have a portajon, so no need to have indoor toilet (for now), we will be using a bucket composter, if necessary. I do want some type of running water, so we will have a gray water direct discharge. Can't be anyworse than brushing you teeth and spitting the water and tooth paste on the ground. :NC

He painted today while I was at work (he is an Airline Pilot, so they have a lot of off days) and will upload the painted frame soon. :pictures:

still finishing up the design, but making some headway.

What about a shower set up like this one

if you set it up right boil water on the stove on the inside and shower outside be good for cleaning off your gear and what not that you may not want to take inside

then move it inside my shed and start working on the flooring.

then we can start to complete the design of the walls.

i need to move some stuff around and move the frame a little to the left, but with rain expected this weekend and all next week, at least its dry.

So what do you have in mind for the interior layout? have you decided on your shower setup?

hard to say, looking at this type of water heater.

http://www.google.com/products/catalog? ... CFkQ8wIwAA

and build a shower from plastic pannels from big box depot.

going to use plastic 55 gallon barrel as external water tank for now.

but we really want to just get the frame up to help decide the final layout.

What you think of the shower setup that I posted the 3 pictures of cause if it is a stationary setup (hunting camp) then that might give you some more accessible room inside of the trailer. Are you going to do beds or futon style mattresses where it can be a couch then folds down to a bed
