Room addition to the ToyBox

Postby Treeview » Thu Jun 27, 2013 10:08 am

My project is a former Toyota Uhaul moving box truck. LIttle by little its becoming a camper. Last week I extended the frame and added a trailer hitch. Now, I'm working on framing and skinning a 24" addition out back.

The back of the box is thick aluminum extrusions...plenty strong. I'm going to use .060" aluminum sheet for the walls and some ~~.037" wall square aluminum tubing for framing the addition.

The next step will be to attach the whole works together. I'm wondering what adhesive with good sealant characteristics would be good to use. I'll use pop rivets for the most part but I still want to have bonding and sealing too. In this situation it's very unlikely that disassembly will be an issue.

3M 5200 seems to be one good choice...Sika makes a similar product I think but I can't recall the name.

Neat little truck, but I really like the telephone trailer in your gallery.

It a shame you couldn't just cut the back door assemble off about 2 feet and then move it back and add the 24” splice in the body.

Sorry I’m not familiar what the sealants as of yet. so no help I know. :(

Junkboy,

I sure considered doing what you said for a long time. When I weighed things out though this is a better choice. It would have added a LOT more work and money to extend the whole back end.

Wow, love the uhaul box Toyota, wish I could find one of those boxes around here to replace the rusty pickup box on my 4x4 :)

Look on craigslist...search for: toyota uhaul

I went across the scales at the scrap yard last week. The rollup door was taken off long ago. The back was enclosed using 2x4/plywood. it weighed 5,040#

Thanks I'll keep my eyes open, I have never seen a Toyota Uhaul up here though, maybe they never made it here.
Good luck with the project!
