Re: 5' X 10' Grumman 2 Sort Of Day 26

Postby RunnerDuck » Sat May 14, 2016 9:34 am

Actually there's been a lot of days between Day 25 and Day 26 but not a lot to show for it until now.

I now have the outer plywood glued to the cores. I used PL and troweled it on with a notched trowel. Then I walked all over the wall and then loaded it with milk cartons filled with water. I do believe it's well bonded

I did have one very unusual situation. I ran out of glue just before I finished applying it so I cut the tip off a new tube and then tried to put it into the gun. It would not go in! It was too long and would not fit.

I worked on it for about ten minutes while the rest of the glue was setting up and I was running out of working time. I finally pounded it into the gun and finished the glue up but I've never run into a situation like that before and at such a critical point :x

I'm now ready to move on but I have a question: Is it better to put the finish on the walls before you put them up or after?

I'm thinking before because it would be easier to do with the wall lying flat.

Always finish with the panels laying flat! Especially with a ceiling panel, but walls, doors, drawer heads etc. will always be a better finish if you can work them when they're horizontal.

Sand, blow off the dust, wipe with a tack rag & finish. A brushed finish will look really good if it isn't too hot to level out first before it tacks over. Do a thinned coat to seal things up, then a couple of full strength coats, 320 paper between coats & a tack rag & you will have a finish that looks sprayed!

Tucson, finishing in summer, ugh, 100 degrees & 8% humidity. Urethane can skin over & show brush strokes even when the panels are laid flat.

Hey Everyone,

I've changed my "Subject" from "Day's" to "Post's" since there seem to be a number of days that go by before I put up a new post.

I've been making some really good progress and it's finally starting to show.

I got the walls stained and installed including the galley wall.

I've started on the galley cabinets and the first thing is installing the 12v/120v power plug, and sizing and installing the slide out tray for the refrigerator/cooler.

I made a custom power outlet by cutting a 120v plug in half making room for a 12v outlet. It's a areal squeeze but it works.

I'll show you the refrigerator in the next post.

And here's the installation of the refrigerator/cooler.

The try is on 110 percent slides so it comes all the way out. The cooling vents are in the front and I hop that's enough space for it to "breath" OK.

I've started on the rest of the cabinets and will post some pictures of that in the near future.

Onward!

Brian,

While I'm still optimistic about some summer camping I'm thinking that fall could be a sure thing, if I keep focused!

Back to work!

Obviously things have changed over the course of time. I haven't posted any of my progress in a very long time and the reasons are varied but the biggest one was a winter hiatus last year as I was building this in a portable garage and damn, it was cold!

It took me a year and nine months to complete and it turned out great!!! I didn't finish it until this fall so still haven't been camping in it :(

So here it is! I'll post the exterior here and then a second post with the interior and third with the Galley. I hope you like what I did.
