I just sold my ’68 Scotty that I have camped in for the past three years and at long last I moved the '78 Play Mor into the garage and started working on it. Since this is the beginning of the build thread and the first time I have done one on years, I will digress for a moment on the history of the camper… My mom bought this to escape the heat on their property while they were working outside before their house was built and then it sat for 20 years unused. She gave it to me after I built a greenhouse for her. I am the 4th owner and I have all the original paperwork on it and receipts for every title transfer since it was new. It was totally trashed inside so I gutted it after getting it home and it has been sitting, waiting on me for four years but hey, I’ve been busy… While it was sitting in the woods on my property, I snapped a cool photo which was published in Vintage Camper Trailers magazine so it’s already “famous” haha.
My personal likes about this camper are that it is a 1978 but could easily pass as a 1968 with it’s vintage style rounded corners. Also, I have never seen a PlayMor that WASN’T a trunk back so I think that is pretty cool too since I don’t care for those (sorry). I love that the camper hasn’t been repainted or gooped up with silicone. Lastly, I just love the simplicity the the camper, it is low to the ground but has no drop floor, all the utility openings are located in one place on the side of the camper and moreover they are minimal and small. Along those same lines, there is no outside storage door; I really like that from a restoration standpoint and for the uncluttered look it provides. I won’t have any propane so I will be mounting my tongue box that I pulled off my old camper for all my outside gear and can store my easy up and other gear under the couch seat. The best part about this is that I am building this using my own plans and can make it 100% me.
OK introduction aside, today I removed all the windows, lights, badges and pretty much anything that is screwed onto the outside except the corner edge trim and door frame. Going to take the side walls off in one piece since they are perfect except around the edges. Also going to re use all the aluminum skin except the top roof section which will be a new, probably white, one piece replacement.
Here are some pics! When it was at my mom’s, then as it looks today at my place.
