Grumman mk2 . A trailer in a trailer

Postby mezmo » Wed May 05, 2010 1:52 am

Cheers jackdaw/Dave,

Great progress you are making!

The galley looks absolutely great
and the Celtic designs on the interior
doors are really sharp! That extra
effort to do that returns its' self in
'the detail' (among your many) that
really sets the interior design apart.

We're all awaiting your impending
"Teardrop Fatherhood"! Here's hoping
all goes well and smoothly on the
anticipated Friday Birthing!

Cheers fellas ,

I'm really looking forward to the forthcoming event too, just so I can see what it looks like from further away.
I've been doing little bits so its ready for the aluminium at the weekend.

I just hope I've got enough room to get the 5'4"x12' sheet in to do the top, inside the donor.
I'm enjoying the build, but it's all coming to a climax .

It's going to be a busy weekend with the build , and finding homes for everything else thats stored in the workshop.

Could you just tear the back-end off and pull the other trailer out that way? Then, you could put a sort of garage door on the back of the old trailer and use it for storage or even for your next build.

Yes and no really Sharon. The back end is coming off, and that's the planned exit route, but then I need the chassis to mount the new trailer on. I'll also be using the window hinges for the hatch, and the door is going to be altered and used. All the trim will be striped off to use on this build , and the some trim is needed for the Coppertop.

It's quite flimsy at the moment, and I'm not sure it would be possible to separate the chassis without collapsing everything.

I've spent this evening emptying everything out in readiness for it the big day. I've filled the shed, and my little cupboard of a garage. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.

Old trailers are fairly easy to come by. I was offered two last week, just had to go pick them up. They weren't local enough or I may have been tempted. We have a few byways in the area, and people occasionally dump caravans in the middle of the night just to get shot of them.

I think Rosie's looking forward to having a better view from the front window too

4 days and counting

whoop whoop The Aluminium is on :D
It's been a long weekend , but I'm feeling like I've got somewhere today :)
After taking Rosie shopping this morning  I got stuck in to dressing the aluminium around the sides of the galley, sorting the roof sheet, dressing the sides around the bottom, and finally doing the hatch.

I jacked the trailer up and placed a bit of 2x1 under it . so the sheet would sit 1" below the trailer to allow for dressing. It covers the end grain of the ply, and some. The sides are cut flush with the roof, back as far as the hatch, then I've got a 12 mm up stand that allows of dressing over the ply side to close of the end grain. The sides have a bead of silkafex 221 sealant around all the edges, and any opening like the electric hook up box, and the fridge vent and exhaust.

It's not easy trying to take photos in such a limited space...in fact it's not that easy to work in said space either.

Here's the ali photos

The extra 12mm height by the galley wall will get dressed flat

Image

It's nice to get a bit of sealant ouz out when it'd dressed
Image

This is my working space   I think I was lining up the roof sheet before dressing it into the galley
Image

I dressed the hatch on a couple of stools on the drive as there wasn't enough room to do it in the workshop
Image

It fit's :)
Image

This is how we're looking tonight

Image

We're out tomorrow night , but I'm hoping to get it polished , and get the hinge and vents fitted during the week, ready for the 'birth on Friday

I've only got the trailer partly polished , but we've been at it again tonight , in preperation for tomorrows event :D :D
I don't know what I was worrying about with space to get the wheels on :? Theres at least 1/4" clearance on the wheel

I thought I'd mount the road lights as a last job in the workshop. They were marked out on the ply, and small holes drilled before the aluminium was put on. Rosie was out helping clear everything away , and caught me in action

With the hatch sitting in place.....through the window

It looks like it lines up nicely ....The hinge will go on tomorrow,
Image

And finally evidence that it's started already......I think it's breaking out.....
Image
Theres a few bits been done inside the trailer that I haven't shown yet.... but hopefully I'll do it tomorrow.

With all of the unpleasant stuff we are forced to deal with, it is great to see someone with good sense. Thanks for letting us watch.
