OK have I bitten off more than I could ever chew up?? Oh my goodness!

I posted in another thread wondering if I could do this rebuild. Got a lot of encouragement. Although at the time I hadn't seen the Metz in person yet.
Here is the photo I received from our friend who is giving us this little gem.

Image

WELL, I've now seen it in person, half taken apart. Uh oh  am I really ready for this??

Image

Image

As I was standing there staring at the pieces I'm thinking, oh yes I can do this, I've seen a ton of fellow forum member's videos and photos of the whole process! I can do this!

Image

Image

Now that I'm at home and uploading the pictures, I'm a bit ummm... overwhelmed!

Husband is gonna freak :fb when he sees these photos...my job now is to talk him into goin to pick it up next week.

I'm gonna go look at some of Len D's before and after photos soes not to give up so soon!
:?

There are more photos in our album of the inside and such.

It's in better shape than I expected and some of the tear-down work is already done! Since you're seeing it in its "underwear", you should not have many nasty surprises. I do hope they are giving you the windows and doors that fit in the cavities. As long as you have some shelter to protect it from the weather, you should be okay. It's not like you must have it done by next summer. Besides, you know there are people here that have done similar rebuilds and will offer lots of advice and maybe some of them might even put in a few days of physical effort. It's not unheard of....

Yes Sharon the windows, doors, hardware, lights, skin, everything is there I just don't have pics yet cause he has to dig it all out.
The ceiling vent was unsalvagable he says so we'll have to do something about that.
Thanks!

Seen worse. May take some effort, but think of the finished product.
Wish someone would give me one!

Santa will be delivering a couple of weeks early at your house this year!

Can't wait to see what you do with it. I'm already following your blog before it's even officially begun.

Try this little trick, don,t look at the whole project and be overwhelmed, look at say 1 piece and only concentrate on repairing or replacing that 1 piece. Don,t be afraid to stop and say time to chill out and go for dinner or whatever. Before you know it that 1 piece will be done, and then move to piece no 2.

You know, for a freebie, that's in great shape. You have pattern pieces for all the pieces you need to replace. You're getting the skin, doors, and windows. The fan/vent will come when the time comes.

Remember not to get in a big hurry.

Take your time, as others have suggested.
When it's done you'll have something you can be extremely proud of.
Since it's this far apart you can also add updates/custom touches as you go.

The appearance doesn't suggest anything that might be beyond fixing.
However, comma, having said that -- what shape is the frame/axle in?

I think it's a real decent trailer! What's interesting and all builders should note the importance of sealing the ply edges. You can see places where the water got under the skin. I don't know if the bottom edge was sealed with anything, could be. May of may not be of importance to some people, that trailer has lasted a long time as it is. I know that I'm planning on sealing all the edges on this new build and will probably put 1 coat of epoxy over the whole thing before I skin it in aluminum. Water is the biggest enemy we have. Have fun with your new project! Doug

The Metzendorf, one of my favorites. I don't own one, but is the best of both worlds, canned ham/teardrop. I sure wish I lived closer, I would then talk you out of it, and tow it home myself. The important thing, hopefully you got a good deal due to the condition, and secondly that it has the proper paper work.

It may be a lot work now, but the good thing is you can rebuild it good as new, and know you have a solid trailer to enjoy many years after. Just keep posting pictures, and you will have a whole community here to guide you.

Edit... I just read your first post. You are getting this with no cost. Even better. Wow! rebuild with a smile, instead of a worried look.

Here is the only photo I have right now of the axle/frame. Terry will look at it more when we get it home. We plan on getting it blasted and finished by a local company who does that stuff. They'll sure it up for us. We'll for sure get a new axle and wheels/tires! Not too sure what happened to the framing at the door step-up but we're gonna replace that part since it seems to be missing.

Thanks everyone for your encouragement! I didn't sleep a wink last night after seeing it in person. My mind was going a mile a minute! :scratchthinking:

BTW: Husband still is not saying too much. I'll let it sink in a little this week while he's on vacation mentioning only a few times. He might come around. :worship: tehe

Here are few photos as motivation.

Here is Rick's (a member of this forum) Metzendorf. I don't know why anyone would consider selling it. Ehhhh Rick. ;-)

As an after thought... It would be really nice if someone could provide a template (CAD drawing) of profile measurements, and a bonus, the interior measurements. The drop floor, similar to what Doug Hodder is building is really nice! It sure would be nice to clone that trailer profile! hint, hint, and Please. So if there are any other Metzendorf owners out there...
