Retro-Kamper (Puffin for Four)

Postby Donutboy » Fri Dec 04, 2009 12:19 am

Hi all.

I've been working on my project for a couple of years now, updating my album as I went along. I never started a build thread, so I guess it's about time. The historical pics are in my album.

I just closed in the top and front. Will try to do the back over the weekend.

I really like the form and functionality of the shape of the lower skirt on the sides...looks great, much improved over original to my eyes. Sort of a grown up version of the Puffin with the insulation and all, but still short and sweet. Keep up the good work.

I've GOT to quit looking at these albums. I love this build. My TD has not been done that long and I've barely used it. But all these standies are making my mouth drool!

I WANT ONE!!!

Nice Job :applause: :applause: :applause:

Very nice Jerry. :applause:  :applause:

I've been following your build since you started. You've combined a really attractive design with an incredible amount of function. What type of exterior finish will you be using?

At least your TD is done. I want too, and I haven't even finished building the first one!

Hey Jerry,

You've got a beauty... but my question is, teardrop for 4? I only see room for 2... can you enlighten me?

Mike:

look at his album. photos # 6 & 7. see the u shaped closet rod brackets? I would bet they are to put an upper bunk directly over the lower dinette berth. And that way it appears either one or two bunks can be installed.

pretty ingenious!!

Nice build.

Hi all. Thanks for the kind words. :)

Tom, with regard to the finish, I've been sitting on the fence going back and forth between CPES and epoxy. I'm leaning in the direction of epoxy at the moment, but haven't made a final decision yet.

Mike, yes John has it right. The closet brackets will support two cots. I forget the distance between the bed and the cots, but I made certain there was enough reason for me to sleep on my side. I embedded t-nuts into the supports on the wall that the closet brackets screw into before I installed them, and I'm using stainless steel hardware. My two sons are young, so weight-wise we should be good for a while.

trailer info

Postby cappy208 » Sat Dec 05, 2009 3:58 pm

Well done Jerry:

a question for you.

This is a carryon 5x8 trailer, correct?

I'm thinking (for now) of using a 4x8 and cantilevering out to 5'7"

Do you have any pics of the bed and frame during construction? I went through all your album and didn't see any of the trailer with the bed.

Did you reinforce the trailer at all? or are you depending on the 2xs to stiffen the frame up?

I am debating having some 2x2 angles welded to the outside to carry the weight on the outsides. I am concerned about having 8" of cantilever over the frame. I also am trying to keep the overall height as low as possible. I don't want to add the 2" of the 2x to the deck height.

Also, it appears you kept the original fenders and just boxed over the top. how did you make the area around the fenders weather tight? Or did you remove the fenders before you put the fender boxes on?

Any thoughts anyone.

Although I haven't gotten past the frame, I'm planning on a similar but larger overhang, but with welded on 1x2 12" angles. I found your pics of the floor on the frame, and you have an overhang with no metal supports, so I'm interested in how yours works out in practice. Seems to be OK, though. BTW, what is that white plastic opening behind the base of the toilet? Is that some kind of cassette toilet?
