New build in Iowa

Postby corncountry » Tue Dec 08, 2009 9:32 pm

I started designing and collecting parts a few months ago, for TD #2. First thing I had to do was build a roller for the 1" square tubing framework. It took a few modifications and a larger motor to get the roller to work right.
I next built the 2" x 11 Ga. Sq. tubing frame and 4" dropped axle. I used the spindles and brakes from a 3500# axle that I had laying around. I hope the brakes are not over kill for a 1000# trailer. {Any comments would be welcome}.
The body will be a modified Cub design, 5' x 9 1/2'.
Cold weather is here, so I may not get too much done for a month or two.
Didn't know how to get more than one picture to post.

You should be able to dial-down those brakes with the controller. Once roadable; a few test stops will get you set right.

Looks great so far! Everything froze here also,

That's not fair Jim. I never got to see the first and your working on the second already. Just kidding.
I'm curious though do you think that the metal frame work helps cut down on the weight? I'm mentally working on the next build and just wondering if it does.

Gary

We will be using TD#1 this summer. Planning on going to a few gatherings and a trip out west in 2010. TD#1 was built in about 3 months, this one will take a little longer. First one was built using a lot of leftover material from my shop. Will have to buy more material for this one.
I think the 16 ga. tubing with .040 aluminum sides with only 1" blue board as a backing should be pretty light and strong enough.
Diane and I wish Trudy a speedy recovery.

Here is a picture of the roller I used to bend the tubing.

Aunti M,
Thanks for the thumbs up. Not much to show yet. Hope to get all the frame work done this winter. Won't start on the rest of the building until spring.

Brad from wheat country,
We will be traveling to Kansas, --wheat country--, sometime next spring. Have a daughter in Clay Center, Kansas. I love the big wheat fields.
Guess you can tell we live on a farm, I like to look at the crops grown in other parts of the country.

Build looks great so far.

As far as the brakes, unless the brakes on the tow vehicle are less tha adequate, I'd ditch them altogether.

We have about 8" of new snow so that put a stop on my wood cutting.
Had about two days to work on the tear. I got most of the framework done. I still have to bend the tubing for the hatch, that might be a little tricky.
Here are some pictures of the progress so far.

I am using sliders, 14 x 22 , I think that was the size. I don't know what I will be using for latches yet. Will be using Monroe plastic hinge on the hatch and doors.

Went to St. Louis Mo. last week to pick up the aluminum for the top and sides. I couldn't find any 5 wide any closer. 5" of new snow today and cold. Waiting for warmer weather to start building again.

Hi Jim

Thanks for the PM's. I am really interested in this build, because it has the style for the body I want, and I really like the size. I was thinking of 5 x 10, so the 9.5 is definitely working for me.

Do you have any idea if these designs will be any less weight than a normal one made of wood?

What is you plan for insulation? I am assumining rigid 1" styrofoam.

I was also wondering about the metal trim edge for the outside corners, but also the hatch area to keep it dry.

Keep up the good work.

I am shooting for 900 to 1000 pounds, if built without brakes it would be quite a bit lighter.
I am using 1" extruded polystyrene insulation. You have to watch the thickness on this because some brands run oversize.
For the edge trim I am using insert molding from a local camper dealer.
Check out emiller's build, he has a good photo of how he sealed his hatch. I also stole (borrowed) his idea.
