Retro-modern tear

Postby eight433 » Tue Jan 19, 2010 1:51 am

Well, I started this project a long, long time ago. About 5 years ago actually. I hit some delays along the way, but that is really neither here nor there.

I hope you all like pictures, cause I have a BUNCH of them

This is the closest thing I have to a starting point. It is built on the frame of a REALLY old pop up camper I bought for 50 bucks. I used it for a snowmobile trailer for a couple of years after knocking the walls off of it.

Its getting closer and closer every day :applause:

I guess I should describe it's construction some. I suppose it is a big larger than many tears. The body alone measures 6 1/2 feet wide, and about 11 1/2 feet long from radius to radius. The walls are just 3/4 plywood. Cabinets are 1/2 plywood. I had no plans, just an idea and a sketch pad. The ceiling is made from 2x2's, insulated, then covered in hardboard or masonite, then the whole thing was skinned in bathroom style pebble textured FRP sheeting (glued pebbled side in)
As of now, the weight distribution might be a ways off, but will have to wait until it is fully loaded to know for sure.

Oh yeah, and I have been calling it the "drunk tank" because I think it will be a MUCH better place to sober up for the night than the REAL drunk tank haha.

May as well throw up a couple pictures of the last trailer I built, while I'm here, since it is probably the smallest one on the site perhaps....

A builder " extraordinaire"! Nice work. :applause: Looks like you used an existing frame?!

yes, that is the frame from a pop up camper. Used it because of convenience only, really. Plus, it was already something I had around the yard. I was using it as a snowmobile trailer.

Love it! I especially like the pull out counter/cook top! Wonderful idea!

alllllllllmost done. Done enough I could make the bed anyways :)

I just have to find some proper weatherstrip for the doors and finish up some paint touch ups... I'm going to take it on a test-tug today and see how well it pulls down the road and get it weighed. Also have to buy some trim to finish up the inside.

To all of you who have already built a tear... Did you get it plated as an assembled trailer or as a camper? My understanding was a camper must be titled and inspected first? Not sure if this qualifies... I will likely just have it weighed and plated as an assembled trailer.

First try at Google SketchUp. Kinda neat program! I know you are supposed to do this BEFORE you build, but oh well, haha

I love the shape, and envy the size!

Is that basecoat clearcoat, or an enamel you painted it with?

Nice work. Love the fact that you hosed 'er down in silver metallic... that's my tug's color and I'd love to do that.

*sigh*

well thanks for the kind words guys!

The paint is synthetic enamel. I bought it CHEAP from the local dealer cause it had been sitting around forever. 8)

Cant wait to sleep in it!
