Built in a day - My kind of build

Postby Two Showers » Fri Feb 19, 2010 7:54 pm

I make and sell these for the ultra light towing market here in the UK.
Well I did up till last week. Due to a degenerating spine (which is how I came about The Sleeper cos I couldn't put tents up anymore), I've just sold the company.

Image

Some of the build sequence is from one I did for a customer, some from my new Ruby Red Sleeper.

The Ruby Red one is my current build for myself. I sold my previous one to a customer who turned up on my door step with cash in his hand. He'd had his trailer tent stolen 2 nights before a Bike/Trike rally and was desperate, so I let him have my own and promised myself I'd build another one for me when I had time.
Now I have the time and this Ruby Red was the final one out of the moulds before they went to their new owners. The Trike is currently being resprayed to the same RAL colour.
No galley kitchen, no mod cons, just a bed. But when you get to a Bike/Trike Rally, there are beer tents, food tents, toilet tents......
What else do you need apart from a bed ????????

Image

Not finished yet as I've had some injections in my spine, so it's taking me longer than the usual day to build. Also I'm taking my time cos this is for me, so there are a few 'extras' being added in.

Those are bad-azz! As a guy who goes to Scooter Rallys (Vintage Vespa) I know about the various 'tents'...

I love "The Sleeper"!!

Start with one custom built chassis and a body kit (door not shown).

Image

Fit suspension, wheels etc to chassis.
Trim edges to fit over chassis after taking body out of mould and fit body onto chassis.

Image

Cut holes for windows, run wiring, fit lights, fit door (only 2 man part of operation is fitting door). Then fit wheel arches.

New one has LED rear lights.
Interior can be different colour to exterior, so I opted for white inside with matching red floor. Floor won't be visible when bed goes in, but I thought it looked nice.

Image

Cover sharp mould edge with purpose moulded seat/shelf.
Strong enough to sit on or gives a shelf for putting your beers on when you're stood chatting with friends

Image

It also hides the electrics and the 12V 21a/hr golf cart battery that powers all the internal 12v LED's and power take of points.

Door to align. Trim and decals to do.
12v remote key fob locking to fit.
And internal 12v lighting etc to put in when I regain a bit more movement in the old back.
Went for the one piece glass windows on mine rather than the split drop back vent windows which is standard. Although customers did get a choice.

And the jobs a good one as we say.

This one belongs to a young English Surfer dude who wanted somewhere warm and dry to sleep when he gets to surf competitions.
Always liked these in Yellow.

Because I don't have to advertise anymore, I haven't decided what decals to go with on this as yet. But the Turtle will be on it, that's for definite. The artwork was drawn up for me by a friend who's an artist.

So on mine it's just finishing off, smoothing various mould marks out, a good cutting and polishing and then I can be back again at the Rallies enjoying the British weather

The Trike is mine. It's a German Import, called a WK Devils Trike.
I treat myself to a performance 1641 VW engine last year (or rather my good lady did).

I'll update this when I get the new one finished.

Great concept and execution. Your ideas will live on with whoever you sell the moulds to. Take care of that back of yours young man and enjoy the time away from the physical demands of doing so many one day builds.

Oh, and the memory is a funny thing... well, a man's memory as I definitely remember this pic posted many moons ago. 8)

From one bad back to another...hang in there! I was diagnosed with spondylolisthesis as a teenager and had a discectomy, laminectomy, and fusion when I was 19. Thirteen years later...so far so good. Hope you have a great doctor that you really trust...it makes all the difference in the world!
