9 sq ft of TD camping ecstacy in the 3 x 3 single wheel TD

Postby Roly Nelson » Fri Jun 17, 2011 2:04 am

No steel frame, no springs, no axle, no fenders, no tongue, no ball-hitch, no safety chains, just a 3 ft by 3ft teardrop trailer with a rear galley, a hatchlid and flip-down counter-top with tip-out cabinet units below. I have built this 80 pound contraption to be towed with dual hitch-connectors to the car and a single wheel centered below the floor. When made ready for camping and sleeping, a 30 inch tip-out unit is deployed with an additional 20 inch drawer-like extension, to provide me with a 6 ft 4 inch bed. Light and ventilation is provided by the plastic roof-hatch and a single window in the door. A storage shelf flips down in the interior for the electric heater, clothes storage an misc. gear.

The floor is simply a 3 ft square piece of 3/4 inch baltic birch which will handle the dual hitch supports and the required metal connectors to the single highway-rated, pnuematic tire and wheel. Sidewalls are of 1/4 inch plywood and the curved roof is simply one layer of 1/8 inch ply. Roof cross members are 3/4 x 1 1/8 inch pine, glued and screwed to the sidewall connections.

I began construction 3 weeks ago and it is now ready for varnish on the interior surfaces and fiberglass resin on all of the exterior corners which will be followed by 3 coats of silver house paint to match the color of my Camry. (always wanted to have a matching hauler). So far, without the hitch connectors and the single wheel, the little thing only weighs 80 pounds. I hope the additional weight of the metal components, will keep the total weight under 150 lbs.

The info I get from the DMV literature, states that anything that is less than 4 feet from the rear tail lights of the car, need not have lights or flags. However, I am afraid I will have to register it and have it licensed as well.........bummer. Of course, tracking and backing is of no concern with a single wheel trailer. Wherever the car goes, the trailer goes, forward of backwards, with no additional effort. We'll see.

I have taken pics of my progress and will post them as soon as the sweet daughter comes over and loads them into my PC.
:?    Roly, 2 down, (the woody and Stacker) and 1 to go.
(PS, and yes, I can turn over while in bed within the "Cramper-Camper"!)

OK, pics are coming as soon as I "git-er-done". All that is lacking now is the single wheel and the dual hitch to the car. Hope to use a Yamaha 10 inch scooter front wheel (street legal) and custom welded dual hookups that will slip right into my existing reciever. So far so good, with the total weight about 85 lbs, including the galley stuff.
;)  :? Roly, working on a custom logo for my OCC decal.......OCC="Optional Custom Campers".

I'm surprised that you haven't built a woody car yet.

I am curious how the slide-out is sealed against water, but this is a truly brilliant concept! Do we know the final weight?

Looks like a pivot down, like an old fashioned bread box. I think the slide out is never exposed to the elements. Just a guess.

Pretty cool and since it is so small, I would think that it is very easy to deal with these little extension ideas. I think the pivot idea could be done on a slightly larger scale to great effect.

Nice job!!

First post said 80 pounds now, hoping to complete at under 150 pounds.

The slideout would be enclosed during travel, but is obviously exposed when in use. With the flat roof on the slideout, what keeps water from pooling and running in the joint?
