8' x 4' Teardrop in Bradford UK

Postby Roadkilluk » Mon Jun 27, 2011 7:20 am

OK, here we go :)

I've posted in the Newbies section, so Hi all

I'm building a teardrop (really?) and this is my build diary :)

Started with google sketchup and got this.

I then went to the builders merchants and got this.

On the CAD drawing I put a grid of 100x100mm over the top and printed that out, then drawing a 100x100mm grid on the 8'x4' I transferred the outline by hand, cut out using a jigsaw (I need a new jigsaw). The next step was to glue and staple 75x25mm to the outline of the new wall.

Yesterday I put the base on the trailer and then put the sides up (all temporarily) so I could measure for the bulkhead. Bulkhead now mostly built.

Also if you look you can see that I have cut and routed the ribs for the hatch.

Today I am trying to locate some 20mm insulation, if I manage that I'll get the 2 sided fully built and also finish the bulkhead.

Looks good, you're at a similar point to me! We must have started at the same time. You even have the dyson stood on there whilst you cut the door!

Your edges look a lot neater than mine! I can't believe you used a jigsaw too though, you must have a steady hand - I was all over the place.

You've also gone for the traditional shape, I love it but just don't have the skills yet to put that together

Good luck with everything and keep the photo's coming!

Impressive stuff !!

Especially the fact that you are building in your kitchen.... not a lot of guys have the balls to do that

I have had a motorbike or two in the house, and to be honest, created my cardboard profile in the lounge, but to be honest, the rest of the build was in the gardern of my end of terrace house.

Good luck, though you do not seem to need much of that.
Greetings from England.

Rian.

Hoping to get it all done in time.

Thanks chaps, not a lot to report today, had a lot of trouble sourcing some 20mm insulation, ended up paying a lot for it and it will be delivered tomorrow. ATM I'm in the middle of my birthday BBQ (40th) and I'm also cutting up the trailer bed so I can rebuild it. Weather looks like it's turning too.

I'll get some photo's of the trailer tonight.

Update on the insulation, it's cost too much, I'm going to return it tomorrow and use loft insulation instead.

Here is the trailer, I've not done a lot but it has been the hottest day in the UK since 2006 or something.

Also, I've been wondering what is the best way to fasten the spurs in (I think they are the spurs) how about this?

That is all for now. Thanks.

I'm using 3mm ply for the roof and inner roof, 6mm for the walls (insulated sandwich),18mm for the floor and finally, 3mm for the bulkhead which will be insulated.

Tomorrow if the starter plays fair, I'll be welding up the trailer and insulating the walls, can't do much if it's raining. :x

Update for today.

Spent all day yesterday remodelling the old trailer, I've reused the angle, added a bit of length at the back, also added 50x50mm for the hitch.

Didn't return the insulation, thought I'd use it, trimmed it to size and fit in position.

Here we add the wiring, we just cut the insulation and pushed it in, it's only going to be 12v so nothing special, just a couple of lights, Stereo and hatch lights will run through the roof and bulkhead.

My brother here is laying the glue for the inner panel, will also be stapled.

End of day showing the wiring in place, the inner panel fitted and the routing for the spars.

I started mine about 4 weeks ago, but then did my back in and couldn't do anything for 2 weeks, I actually pulled my back putting the trailer in the garden after getting the wood!

I had a look at your build and it's coming along nicely :) I'm not sure wether I'll be able to pull off the teardrop shape, but I felt that if I was to make one, it would have to be a teardrop shape.

There should be plenty of photo's this week, next week I'll be back at work.

.. Jackdaw, the celotex was 20mm and fit quite snugly :)

Some work done today, I've got the sides glued and screwed on, the spars are now in place including the space for the roof vent, also I've made a start on the hatch.

Very good looking teardrop! Your construction looks really good. I like the routed out pockets for the spars. That will add strength. Nice work!
