My first Build "The Temple of Accumulated Error"

Postby jmkaay » Thu Jul 14, 2011 2:36 am

Hi Folks,
I started my build three days ago, but forgot my new user name! So I'm a little behind in posting.

I got a HF trailer back in April to tow my boat on, but decided to build a teardrop instead of a 4th boat last week.

The plan is to make a 5 x 9 tear on the 4 x 8 HF frame (I'm a big guy!)

Day one: I tore the 4 x 8 ply off the frame, turned it sideways and added some more ply to make it 5 x 9.

More tomorrow - Thanks for looking!

I just spent twenty minutes writing a great post and then lost my wireless connection and it's gone! I hate that!
Oh well, try again.

It's called "The Temple of Accumulated Error" because I evidently put the trailer together 1/4 " out of square! Makes It hard to make the ply fit.

Second day, I put a 1" edging around the ply and across it in strategic locations. (wherever I felt like) I also boxed in the wheels.
Image

Third day I filled in with 1" blue foam insulation and covered that with some nice 1/4" ply I found at HD.
Image
Oh yeah, I got carried away and started to stain the deck too.

Not much to look at yet. Should be getting more interesting soon!

That's my 13' rowing skiff in the background - what I originally bought the trailer for - now for sale.

Take it easy!

Well lookin good so far, and at least your only a quater inch out of square, I need to loosen my trailer up and get it in square, Im off almost an inch. I remember my caprenter friend Connor told me once how quickly a little off can add up over a distance. I almost wish I wasnt goin in for a few hours of doubletime tomorrow!

I think it is so decent of you to accumulate all your error and not try to drop little bits of error here and there where other builders could end up picking them up. Very public-spirited.

Angib: it's more of an involuntary process, actually. ;-)

2bits: Yeah, it's a 13' rowing skiff I built last summer (my 3rd build). It was getting too heavy for me to get off the top of my SUV, so I bought the trailer for the boat, then the teardrop urge took over.
I can already see I'm going to have to build another boat when the trailer is done.

day 4 and 5

Postby jmkaay » Wed Jul 20, 2011 10:18 pm

Back again!
Day 4 - I installed a 2x2 around the bottom edge of my floor to give me something to attach the sides to. Also built a 18x28 drawer to hold my new 5 day cooler.
More accumulated error! I couldn't find a 28 in. full extension slide so I had to turn the drawer sideways and used a 20" slide. Too impatient (and cheap!) to order one delivered.
Image

Day 5 - Installed the drawer, also roughed in a countertop and crossbrace.
Image

Day 6 - I think? Worked on the galley frame for a little while.
These days are not all consecutive, you know! I've taken several days off for R & R and last Friday took my 7 Year old grandson to 4H camp way back in the Santa Cruz mountains for a full day.

Image

Today I consulted with my Architect (daughter 1) and tomorrow I'll consult with my Graphic Designer (daughter 2) about the outside design of the trailer.

I'm planning to build the sides in two pieces each (to make it easier to handle), with an outer skin/insulation/inner skin sandwich. Maybe I'll finish them before attaching them to the frame, but will probably get too impatient!

Further updates as events occur!

A shout out to Grant at Li'l Bear! and some good progress.

Postby jmkaay » Sat Jul 23, 2011 12:17 am

I made some good progress today, but alas, no photos! I'll do better tomorrow, I promise.
Started with a trip to the big blue box where I dropped a c note on ply, pine and insulation.
Then went to The Sawdust Shop
http://www.sawdustshop.com/ and bought 2 sheets of 1/4" Baltic Birch.
I laid out the front half of my TD on the sheets of birch, using a batten to get a smooth curve, and cut out both sides at once. That went very well!
Then I started making curved pine reenforcements all around the perimeter of the first sheet, using a biscuit machine, and glued one side together.

Exhaustion set in about then, so I called it a day after 6 & 1/2 hours.

I came home and found two packages waiting for me. I'd ordered 4 windows and a galley hinge from Li'l Bear, and got them in 3 Days.
FASTEST. DELIVERY. EVER.
They look great too. now I can get the final layout together.

Enough for tonight,
See you down the road!
